Abstract

System and method for fixing detachable handlebars to a mount. Specifically, the mount is independent the handlebars; the mount may include structure, corresponding to the handlebars that comprises a coupling that allows for the mount to quickly and simply engage and disengage the handlebars while also maintaining the coupling free from sliding, rotating, disengaging, or otherwise moving while mounted. In the present arrangement the mount includes a front plate, corresponding receiver shaft assembly including the aforementioned structure, and a mount bracket. The mount bracket may contain structure allowing for the mount to be coupled to any surface that can support the weight of the mount and handlebars. The assembly disclosed in accordance with the present invention may generally exploit several compression mechanisms to bias a series of keys into a locking position to secure the handlebars attachment to the mount. Other embodiments are also included.

We claim: 
     
         1 . A bicycle handlebar mounting system, the system comprising:
 a locking shaft assembly extending outward from a bicycle handgrip along an axis which is configured to move radially along the axis;   a shoulder positioned proximate a locking shaft assembly base and between the bicycle handgrip and the locking shaft assembly, the locking shaft assembly being rotatable about the axis;   an anti-rotation tab extending away from the locking shaft assembly;   a mount receiver assembly comprising a receiving shaft assembly disposed at least partially inside a hollow cylindrical receiver extending through the mount receiver assembly configured to slidably couple to the locking shaft assembly;   wherein the anti-rotation tab is configured to attach to a locking groove of the mount receiver assembly and the receiving shaft assembly so that the locking groove prevents rotation of the handgrip relative the receiving shaft assembly and a mounting shaft assembly when the anti-rotation tab is engaged with the locking groove;   a mount configured to releasably couple with the locking shaft assembly, wherein the mount comprises the mount receiver assembly and a mount bracket; and   a first and a second key extending from the locking shaft assembly away from the axis wherein the first and the second key are configured to slide at least partially through the mount receiver assembly.   
     
     
         2 . The bicycle handlebar mounting system of  claim 1 , wherein the mount further comprises an opening on a face of the mount leading to the receiving shaft, configured to receive at least a portion of the locking shaft assembly. 
     
     
         3 . The bicycle handlebar mounting system of  claim 2 , wherein the face of the mount further comprises an outer ledge configured to couple to a mount bracket ledge positioned on the mount bracket. 
     
     
         4 . The bicycle handlebar mounting system of  claim 1 , wherein the mount receiver assembly further comprises a mount receiver assembly bracket configured to couple the mount receiver assembly to the mount bracket. 
     
     
         5 . The bicycle handlebar mounting system of  claim 1 , wherein the mount receiver assembly further comprises a key seat, configured to receive the first key and the second key. 
     
     
         6 . The bicycle handlebar mounting system of  claim 2 , wherein the opening on the face of the mount is further configured to align with the key seat and locking groove of the receiver shaft assembly. 
     
     
         7 . The bicycle handlebar mounting system of  claim 5 , further comprising at least one compressible gasket which is configured to have a compressed configuration and an extended configuration such that the second key axially rotates about the axis and engages with an edge of the mount receiver assembly to prevent radial movement of the locking shaft. 
     
     
         8 . The bicycle handlebar mounting system of  claim 7 , further comprising a peg, positioned on the locking shaft extending away from the axis. 
     
     
         9 . The bicycle handlebar mounting system of  claim 8 , further comprising a bushing proximate the compressible gasket, wherein the locking shaft extends through the bushing, and wherein the bushing comprises a guiding slot configured to receive the peg and is configured to preserve the structure of the second key. 
     
     
         10 . The bicycle handlebar mounting system of  claim 5 , further comprising:
 a first receiving slot that extends along at least a portion of a length of the receiving shaft, the first receiving slot being position to align with and maintain the structure of the key seat; and   a second receiving slot that extends along a portion of a circumference of the receiving shaft, the second receiving slot being position to align with and maintain the structure of the key seat.   
     
     
         11 . The bicycle handlebar mounting system of  claim 10 , wherein the first receiving slot is configured to receive the first key and the second key and the second receiving slot is configured to receive the first key while the second key remains in the first receiving slot. 
     
     
         12 . The detachable handlebar mounting system of  claim 1 , wherein the mount bracket further comprises a mounting slot configured to allow the mount to be coupled to various surfaces. 
     
     
         13 . A method for attaching bicycle handlebars to a mount the method comprising:
 inserting a locking shaft of a handlebar portion into a receiving shaft of a mount receiver assembly such that at a first and second key, positioned on the locking shaft, pass at least partially through a key seat of a receiver shaft;   axially rotating the locking shaft about a first axis to align an anti-rotation tab with a locking groove on the mount receiver assembly;   detaching the locking shaft from the receiving shaft by biasing the locking groove portion in the receiving shaft away from the anti-rotation tab; axially rotating the locking shaft about the axis; and moving the handlebar portion along the first axis such that the locking shaft is moved out of the mount receiver assembly.   
     
     
         14 . The method for attaching removable bicycle handlebars to a bicycle of  claim 13 , wherein axially rotating the locking shaft about the first axis includes rotating the locking shaft at least 90 degrees. 
     
     
         15 . A detachable handlebar mount, the mount comprising:
 A mount receiver assembly comprising:
 A plurality of receiver openings, each receiver opening extending at least partially through the length of the mount receiver assembly, wherein each receiver opening comprises:
 A locking groove configured to limit rotation within the receiver opening; 
 
   A mount face comprising an outer ledge; and   A mount bracket comprising a mount bracket ledge, wherein the mount bracket is configured to allow the mount to be fixed to any surface that can support the weight of the mount.   
     
     
         16 . The detachable handlebar mount of  claim 15 , wherein each receiver opening further comprises a key seat, wherein the key seat extends at least partially along the length of the receiver opening. 
     
     
         17 . The detachable handlebar mount of  claim 16 , wherein the mount face is further configured to align with the key seat and locking groove of each receiver opening of the mount receiver assembly. 
     
     
         18 . The detachable handlebar mount of  claim 15  wherein the mount bracket ledge is further configured to couple to the outer ledge. 
     
     
         19 . The detachable handlebar mount of  claim 15 , wherein the receiver assembly further comprises a receiver assembly bracket, the receiver assembly bracket being configured to couple the mount receiver assembly to the mount bracket. 
     
     
         20 . The detachable handlebar mount of  claim 15 , wherein the mount bracket further comprises a mounting slot configured to increase the ease and effectiveness with which the mount can be coupled to extraneous surfaces.
