Abstract
An abrasive tool can include a bonded abrasive including a body and a barrier layer bonded to a major surface of the body. The body can include abrasive particles contained within a bond material. The barrier material can include a metal-containing film. In an embodiment, the barrier layer may further include a polymer-containing film. In another embodiment, the barrier layer may include a biaxially oriented material. The abrasive tool may be formed such that the barrier layer is formed in-situ with the formation of the bonded abrasive.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . An abrasive tool comprising:
a bonded abrasive including a body comprising abrasive particles contained within a bond material, wherein the body comprises a first major surface and a second major surface opposite the first major surface, and a peripheral surface extending between the first major surface and the second major surface; and a barrier layer directly bonded to the first major surface and second major surface of the body, wherein the barrier layer comprises a metal; and wherein the barrier layer does not extend over the peripheral surface.
2 . The abrasive tool of claim 1 , wherein the barrier layer further comprises a polymer.
3 . The abrasive tool of claim 2 , wherein the polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyamides, polyesters, polyethlyenes, polypropylene, polyvinyls, epoxies, resins, polyurethanes, rubbers, polyimides, phenolics, polybenzimidazole, aromatic polyamide, and a combination thereof.
4 . The abrasive tool of claim 2 , wherein the polymer comprises a biaxially-oriented polymer.
5 . The abrasive tool of claim 1 , wherein the barrier layer comprises a foil including the metal.
6 . The abrasive tool of claim 1 , wherein the barrier layer comprises a metal-containing film including the metal.
7 . The abrasive tool of claim 1 , wherein the barrier layer comprises a plurality of films, wherein an innermost layer of the barrier layer comprises a polymer and is directly bonded to the first and second major surfaces of the body.
8 . The abrasive tool of claim 1 , wherein the barrier layer comprises a film including the metal, a first polymer-containing film, and a second polymer-containing film, wherein the film including the metal is disposed between the first and second polymer-containing films.
9 . The abrasive tool of claim 8 , wherein the first polymer-containing film comprises a first polymer, and the second polymer-containing film comprises a second polymer different from the first polymer.
10 . The abrasive tool of claim 9 , wherein the first polymer comprises polyester, polypropylene, polyamide, nylon, or a combination thereof.
11 . The abrasive tool of claim 9 , wherein the first polymer comprises a biaxially-orientated polymer.
12 . The abrasive tool of claim 11 , wherein the first polymer-containing film is an outermost layer of the barrier layer.
13 . The abrasive tool of claim 12 , wherein the first polymer comprises a biaxially-orientated nylon, biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate, biaxially-oriented polypropylene, or any combination thereof.
14 . The abrasive tool of claim 9 , wherein the second polymer comprises polyethylene.
15 . The abrasive tool of claim 1 , wherein the barrier layer is co-cured with the first and second major surfaces.
16 . An abrasive tool comprising:
a bonded abrasive including a body comprising abrasive particles contained within a bond material, wherein the body comprises a first major surface and a second major surface opposite the first major surface, and a peripheral surface extending between the first major surface and the second major surface; and a barrier layer directly bonded to at least the first major surface and the second major surface of the body, wherein the barrier layer does not extend over the peripheral surface; and wherein the barrier layer comprises a plurality of layers including a polymer-containing film overlying a foil and an innermost layer comprising a polymer.
17 . The abrasive tool of claim 16 , wherein the barrier layer further comprises another polymer-containing film, wherein the foil is disposed between the polymer-containing films.
18 . The abrasive tool of claim 16 , wherein the polymer-containing film is an outermost layer of the barrier layer and comprises a biaxially-oriented polymer.
19 . The abrasive tool of claim 18 , wherein the biaxially-oriented polymer comprises biaxially-oriented nylon, biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate, biaxially-oriented polypropylene, or any combination thereof.
20 . The abrasive tool of claim 16 , wherein the innermost layer comprises polyethylene.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
