Abstract

The present invention relates to oxaloacetate compounds that activate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), including the preparation of the compounds, compositions containing the compounds, preserving said compounds and the use of the compounds in the prevention or treatment of disorders such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer.

1 . A method for producing a beneficial lipid metabolism activating agent comprising the step of adding to a composition oxaloacetate, oxaloacetic acid, an oxaloacetate salt, alpha-ketoglutarate or aspartate. 
     
     
         2 . A method for producing an obesity suppressing agent comprising the step of adding to a composition oxaloacetate, oxaloacetic acid, an oxaloacetate salt, alpha-ketoglutarate or aspartate. 
     
     
         3 . A method for producing a diabetes preventing/ameliorating agent comprising the step of adding to a composition oxaloacetate, oxaloacetic acid, an oxaloacetate salt, alpha-ketoglutarate or aspartate. 
     
     
         4 . A method for producing a hepatic hypertrophy suppressing agent comprising the step of adding to a composition oxaloacetate, oxaloacetic acid, an oxaloacetate salt, alpha-ketoglutarate or aspartate. 
     
     
         5 . A method for producing a fatty liver suppressing agent comprising the step of adding to a composition oxaloacetate, oxaloacetic acid, an oxaloacetate salt, alpha-ketoglutarate or aspartate. 
     
     
         6 . A method for producing an exercise-substitutive agent comprising the step of adding to a composition oxaloacetate, oxaloacetic acid, an oxaloacetate salt, alpha-ketoglutarate or aspartate. 
     
     
         7 . A method for producing an athletic enhancing nutritional supplement comprising the step of adding to a composition oxaloacetate, oxaloacetic acid, an oxaloacetate salt, alpha-ketoglutarate or aspartate. 
     
     
         8 . A composition comprising oxaloacetate, oxaloacetic acid, an oxaloacetate salt, alpha-ketoglutarate or aspartate and an antidiabetic drug. 
     
     
         9 . The composition of  claim 8 , wherein the antidiabetic drug is selected from the group consisting of rosiglitazone, troglitazone, pioglitazone, and metformin.
