Abstract
The invention generally relates to dextran fibers which are preferably electrospun and devices formed from such fibers. In particular, such devices may include substances of interest (such as therapeutic substances) associated with the electrospun fibers. Upon exposure to a liquid the electrospun fibers dissolve immediately and the substances of interest are released into the liquid. Exemplary devices include bandages formed from electrospun dextran fibers and associated agents that promote hemostasis, such as thrombin and fibrinogen.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A hemostatic product comprising:
a hemostatic agent; a sucrose coating applied to the hemostatic agent; and a dextran support to which the sucrose coated hemostatic agent is applied to form the hemostatic product.
2 . The hemostatic product of claim 1 , wherein the sucrose coated hemostatic agent is in a particulate form.
3 . The hemostatic product of claim 1 , and further comprising mixing the sucrose coated hemostatic agent with a bulking agent before the sucrose coated hemostatic agent is applied to the dextran support.
4 . The hemostatic product of claim 1 , wherein the hemostatic agent comprises at least one of thrombin and fibrinogen.
5 . The hemostatic product of claim 4 , wherein the thrombin is in the hemostatic product at a concentration of between about 100 units and about 10,000 units and wherein the fibrinogen is in the hemostatic product at a concentration of between about 1 grams and about 3 grams.
6 . The hemostatic product of claim 1 , wherein the dextran support comprises electrospun dextran fibers.
7 . The hemostatic product of claim 1 , wherein the hemostatic product further comprises a support material to which the dextran support is applied and wherein the support material comprises at least one of gauze, compressed electrospun dextran, polyglycolytic acid polymers, polylactic acid polymers, caprolactone polymers and charged nylon.
8 . A method of inducing hemostasis in a wound, comprising the step of
fabricating a hemostatic product that comprises:
providing a hemostatic agent;
applying a sucrose coating to the hemostatic agent; and
applying the sucrose coated hemostatic agent to a dextran support;
applying the hemostatic product to the wound in which a bodily fluid is present; releasing the hemostatic agent from the hemostatic product; and inducing hemostasis in the wound.
9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the sucrose coated hemostatic agent is in a particulate form when applied to the dextran support.
10 . The method of claim 8 , and further comprising mixing the sucrose coated hemostatic agent with a bulking agent before the sucrose coated hemostatic agent is applied to the dextran support.
11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the hemostatic agent comprises at least one of thrombin and fibrinogen.
12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the thrombin is in the hemostatic product at a concentration of between about 100 units and about 10,000 units and wherein the fibrinogen is in the hemostatic product at a concentration of between about 1 grams and about 3 grams.
13 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the dextran support comprises electrospun dextran fibers.
14 . The method of claim 8 , wherein fabricating the hemostatic product further comprises applying the dextran support to a support material and wherein the support material comprises at least one of gauze, compressed electrospun dextran, polyglycolytic acid polymers, polylactic acid polymers, caprolactone polymers and charged nylon.
15 . The method of claim 8 , wherein fabricating the hemostatic product further comprises compressing the dextran support to modulate release of the hemostatic agent from the hemostatic product.
16 . A method of modulating dissolution of a hemostatic product comprising:
fabricating a hemostatic product that comprises:
providing a hemostatic agent;
compressing a dextran support; and
applying the hemostatic agent to the dextran support;
applying the hemostatic product to the wound in which a bodily fluid is present; releasing the hemostatic agent from the hemostatic product; and inducing hemostasis in the wound.
17 . The method of claim 16 , and further comprising coating the hemostatic agent with sucrose, wherein the sucrose coated hemostatic agent is in a particulate form when applied to the dextran support.
18 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the hemostatic agent is selected from the group consisting of thrombin and fibrinogen, wherein the thrombin is in the hemostatic product at a concentration of between about 100 units and about 10,000 units and wherein the fibrinogen is in the hemostatic product at a concentration of between about 1 grams and about 3 grams.
19 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the dextran support comprises electrospun dextran fibers.
20 . The method of claim 16 , wherein fabricating the hemostatic product further comprises applying the dextran support to a support material and wherein the support material comprises at least one of gauze, compressed electrospun dextran, polyglycolytic acid polymers, polylactic acid polymers, caprolactone polymers and charged nylon.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
