Abstract

Methods and systems for obtaining platelets are disclosed. Platelets are collected in a pre-determined volume of plasma and a determined amount of a combined storage medium including the pre-determined amount of plasma and a volume of a synthetic additive solution.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 .- 14 . (canceled)

15 . A system for the collection of platelets comprising:
 a) a reusable hardware apparatus, said apparatus including a separation device and a programmable microprocessor driven controller including instructions for processing a biological fluid; b) a disposable processing circuit associated with said apparatus, said circuit including a processing chamber for receiving a biological fluid and one or more containers for collecting platelets; c) wherein said controller is programmed to:
 i. obtain platelets with a pre-determined volume of residual plasma remaining with said platelets;
ii. determine an effective volume of combined storage medium required based on a targeted number of platelets; and
iii. combine said obtained platelets with a synthetic additive solution to arrive at said determined combined volume of residual plasma and synthetic additive solution based on said targeted number of platelets.

16 . The system of claim 15 wherein said separation device comprises a rotatable element.

17 . The system of claim 15 wherein said rotatable element generates a centrifugal field sufficient to separate platelets from other components of a biological fluid.

18 . The system of claim 15 further comprising a source of a synthetic additive solution.

19 . The system of claim 15 wherein said controller is programmed to deliver a selected volume of said synthetic additive solution to concentrated platelets in said residual amount of plasma.

20 . The system of claim 15 wherein said processing chamber is mountable on said rotatable member and said processing chamber comprises a separation sub-chamber and a collection sub-chamber.

         21 . A platelet product comprising:
 a) approximately 2.0×10 11 -15.0×10 11 platelets; b) approximately 100-1,200 ml of a combined storage medium including residual plasma and a synthetic storage medium wherein no more than approximately 10-50 ml is plasma.

22 . The platelet product of claim 21 wherein the volume of plasma is no greater than approximately 30 ml.

23 . The platelet product of claim 21 wherein said synthetic additive solution comprises sodium citrate, sodium acetate and sodium chloride.

24 . The platelet product of claim 21 wherein said synthetic additive solution further comprises sodium phosphate.

25 . The platelet product of claim 21 wherein said synthetic additive solution further comprises one or more of magnesium, calcium, adenine and bicarbonate.
