Abstract

The invention provides a combination or salt of lipoic acid and a compound of formula (I): The combinations and salts are useful for treating diabetes.

         6 . A method for preventing or treating a pathological condition or symptom in a mammal, wherein kappa receptor activity is implicated and antagonism of kappa receptors is desired comprising administering to the mammal an effective amount of:
 a) a lipoic acid salt of a compound of formula (I):   
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         b) a salt of formula (II) or a hydrate thereof: 
       
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         c) a composition comprising a compound of formula (I): 
       
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         and lipoic acid; or

A method for preventing or treating disease in a mammal, comprising administering to the mammal, an effective amount of a-d as described in  claim 6 , wherein the disease is selected from the group consisting of: (a) diabetes; (b) glucose intolerance; (c) hyperinsulinemia; (d) insulin resistance; (e) diabetic nephropathy; (f) diabetic neuropathy; (g) fatty liver conditions; (h) cardiovascular disease; (i) cachexia in a human subject; (j) atherogenic dyslipidemia; (k) weight management; and (l) impaired glucose tolerance. 
     
     
         13 . A method for preventing or treating metabolic syndrome in a mammal, comprising administering to the mammal, an effective amount of a-d as described in  claim 6 .

A method for treating disease in a mammal, comprising administering to the mammal, an effective amount of a-d as described in  claim 6 , wherein the disease is selected from the group consisting of: (a) diabetes; (b) glucose intolerance; (c) hyperinsulinemia; (d) insulin resistance; (e) diabetic nephropathy; (f) diabetic neuropathy; (g) fatty liver conditions; (h) cardiovascular disease; (i) cachexia in a human subject; (j) atherogenic dyslipidemia; (k) weight management; and (l) impaired glucose tolerance.
