Methods and systems for generating a tissue pocket in a patient
Abstract
Certain aspects of this disclosure relate to uniquely constructed medical implants that incorporate an electronic or other medical device. Some illustrative pocket-like implants provide an interior space for receipt of an electronic medical device, and are implantable in a patient with the electronic medical device positioned in the interior space. In one form, an inventive construct includes a remodelable material component that is effective upon implantation to promote cellular invasion and ingrowth into the remodelable material so that it becomes replaced by new patient tissue and so that the electronic medical device becomes surrounded by a new pocket structure comprised of newly generated, functional patient tissue. The electronic medical device will be a pacing device or other cardiac rhythm management (CRM) device in select embodiments.

23 . A medical product, comprising:
a remodelable pocket structure comprising an acellular extracellular matrix composition and a therapeutic agent, said pocket structure comprising an internal region; and an implantable medical device disposed in said internal region of said pocket structure.
24 . The medical product of claim 23 , wherein the pocket structure is configured to induce cell proliferation and tissue growth and to generate functional patient tissue upon implantation in a patient.
25 . The medical product of claim 24 , wherein said implantable medical device comprises a medical device selected from the group consisting of a pacemaker, defibrillator, implantable access system, neurostimulator, infusion pump, and ventricular assist device.
26 . The medical product of claim 24 , wherein said extracellular matrix composition comprises extracellular matrix derived from small intestine submucosa tissue.
27 . The medical product of claim 24 , wherein said extracellular matrix composition comprises extracellular matrix derived from urinary bladder submucosa.
28 . The medical product of claim 24 , wherein said extracellular matrix composition comprises extracellular matrix derived from submucosa, renal capsule membrane, dermal collagen, dura mater, pericardium, fascia lata, serosa, peritoneum or basement membrane layers.
29 . The medical product of claim 24 , wherein said therapeutic agent comprises one or more antibiotic agents.
30 . The medical product of claim 29 , wherein said one or more antibiotic agents comprise cefazolin, rifampin, and/or minocycline.
31 . The medical product of claim 26 , wherein said therapeutic agent comprises one or more antibiotic agents.
32 . The medical product of claim 31 , wherein said one or more antibiotic agents comprise cefazolin, rifampin, and/or minocycline.
33 . The medical product of claim 27 , wherein said therapeutic agent comprises one or more antibiotic agents.
34 . The medical product of claim 33 , wherein said one or more antibiotic agents comprise cefazolin, rifampin, and/or minocycline.
35 . The medical product of claim 31 , wherein said implantable medical device comprises a medical device selected from the group consisting of a pacemaker, defibrillator, implantable access system, neurostimulator, infusion pump, and ventricular assist device.

43 . The medical product of claim 23 , wherein said extracellular matrix composition includes fibronectin.
44 . The medical product of claim 43 , wherein said therapeutic agent comprises chitosan.
45 . The medical product of claim 44 , wherein said extracellular matrix composition is in sheet form.
46 . The medical product of claim 45 , wherein said sheet form extracellular matrix composition is folded to form said pocket structure comprising said internal region.
47 . The medical product of claim 46 , wherein said extracellular matrix composition comprises extracellular matrix derived from small intestine submucosa tissue.
48 . The medical product of claim 47 , wherein said extracellular matrix includes one or more bioactive agents.
49 . The medical product of claim 48 , wherein said one or more bioactive agents comprise basic fibroblast growth factor, transforming growth factor beta, epidermal growth factor, cartilage derived growth factor, and/or platelet derived growth factor.
50 . The medical product of claim 23 , wherein said remodelable pocket structure comprises a multilaminate extracellular matrix material.
51 . The medical product of claim 50 , wherein said multilaminate extracellular matrix material comprises a plurality of extracellular matrix material layers bonded together.
52 . The medical product of claim 50 , wherein said multilaminate extracellular matrix material comprises one or more layers of extracellular matrix material and one or more polymer layers.
53 . The medical product of claim 52 , wherein said one or more polymer layers comprise a bioabsorbable polymer layer.
