Abstract

Disclosed are methods, apparatus, and computer readable storage mediums for filtering communication events communicated over a communications network from a network node to a device. In one aspect, a method includes configuring, via a communication client application, the device to associate each of a plurality of sets of filtering parameters with a different operating mode of the device, in response to a transition of the device from a first operating mode to a second operating mode, determining, by the device, a first set of filtering parameters associated with the second operating mode based on the configuring, and transmitting, by the device, the determined first set of filtering parameters to the network node, the transmission instructing the network node to transmit particular types of communication events permitted by the first set of filtering parameters to the device and to block other types of communication events to the device that are not permitted by the first set of filtering parameters.

         2 . A method of filtering communication events communicated over a communications network from a network node to a device, the method comprising:
 configuring, via a communication client application, the device to associate each of a plurality of sets of filtering parameters with a different operating mode of the device;   in response to a transition of the device from a first operating mode to a second operating mode:
 determining, by the device, a first set of filtering parameters associated with the second operating mode based on the configuring, and 
 transmitting, by the device, the determined first set of filtering parameters to the network node, the transmission instructing the network node to transmit particular types of communication events permitted by the first set of filtering parameters to the device and to block other types of communication events to the device that are not permitted by the first set of filtering parameters. 
   
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 2 , further comprising maintaining a user interface on a display of the device when the device is in the second operating mode. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 3 , further comprising transitioning to the first operating mode in response to a closing of the user interface. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the first set of filtering parameters associated with the second operating mode configure the network node to transmit all types of communication events to the device. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 5 , wherein the configuring associates a second set of filtering parameters with the first operating mode, and when transmitted to the network node, the second set of filtering parameters configure the network node to forward call events to the device and block other communication events from the device. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the transition from the first operating mode to the second operating mode is responsive to a user input received by the device. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 2 , further comprising:
 receiving a user input; and   inhibiting display of data to the device in response to the input, wherein the transition from the first operating mode to the second operating mode is in response to the inhibiting.   
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 2 , further comprising entering, by the device, a power saving mode, wherein the transition from the first operating mode to the second operating mode is in response to the entering of the power saving mode. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 9 , further comprising detecting a period of inactivity in which no user input is received by the device, wherein the entering of the power saving mode is in response to the detection. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the transmission to the network node instructs the network node to perform an action on communication events blocked by the first set of communication parameters, wherein the action includes one of transmitting a response to a device initiating the communication event, and delivering the communication event to the user device at a later time. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the transmission to the network node instructs the network node to store a communication event blocked by the first set of communication parameters, the method further comprising transmitting a second set of communication parameters to the network node, the transmission of the second set of communication parameters instructing the network node to transmit the stored communication event to the user device. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the types of communication events include: a voice call; a video call; a multi-user voice or video call; an instant message; a multi-user instant message; and a file transfer. 
     
     
         14 . A device comprising:
 a network interface;   one or more hardware processors; and   computer-readable storage media having instructions stored thereon that are executable by the one or more hardware processors to implement a communication client application that is configured to perform operations comprising:
 configuring, via installation of a communication client application, the device to associate each of a plurality of sets of filtering parameters with a different operating mode of the device; 
 in response to a transition of the device from a first operating mode to a second operating mode: 
 determining, by the device, a first set of filtering parameters associated with the second operating mode based on the configuring, and 
 transmitting, by the device, the determined set of filtering parameters to a network node, the transmission instructing the network node to transmit particular types of communication events permitted by the first set of filtering parameters to the device and to block other types of communication events to the device that are not permitted by the first set of filtering parameters. 
   
     
     
         15 . The device of  claim 14 , the operations further comprising:
 transitioning the device to the second operating mode in response to presentation of a user interface on a display of the device; and   transitioning the device to the first operating mode is response to a closing of the user interface.   
     
     
         16 . The device of  claim 14 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving a user input; and   inhibiting display of data to the device in response to the input, wherein the transition from the first operating mode to the second operating mode is in response to the inhibiting.   
     
     
         17 . The device of  claim 14 , the operations further comprising detecting a period of inactivity in which no user input is received by the device, and entering a power saving mode in response to the period of inactivity, wherein the transition from the first operating mode to the second operating mode is in response to the entering of the power saving mode. 
     
     
         18 . The device of  claim 14 , wherein the transmission to the network node instructs the network node to perform an action on communication events blocked by the first set of communication parameters, wherein the action includes one of transmitting a response to a device initiating the communication event, and delivering the communication event to the device at a later time. 
     
     
         19 . The device of  claim 18 , wherein the transmission to the network node instructs the network node to store a communication event blocked by the first set of communication parameters, the operations further comprising transmitting a second set of communication parameters to the network node, the transmission of the second set of communication parameters instructing the network node to transmit the stored communication event to the device. 
     
     
         20 . A node coupled to a communications network, the node comprising:
 one or more hardware processors, configured to:
 receive filtering parameters from a first device associated with a user, the filtering parameters defining one or more types of communication events that the first device is permitted to receive from the communications network, 
 receive further filtering parameters from a second device, defining one or more types of communication events that the second device is permitted to receive from the communications network, 
 compare a received communication event to both the filtering parameters and the further filtering parameters to determine if the received communication event corresponds to a type of communication event that is defined in the filtering parameters as being permitted for receipt by the first device and determine if the communication event corresponds to a type of communication event that is defined in the further filtering parameters as being permitted for receipt by the second device, and control transmission of the received communication event to the first device based on the comparison, and to the second device based on the comparison. 
   
     
     
         21 . The node of  claim 20 , wherein the filtering parameters from the first communication client application also define one or more second types of communication events that the first device is not permitted to receive from the communications network when the first communication client application is operating in the one operating mode, and instruct the node to perform an action upon receiving a communication event for the first device of the second type, the action including one of transmitting a response to the communication event, and delaying transmission of the communication event to the first device until a later time.
