Abstract

A reinforcing plate and method for use in sistering to a wood member to create a composite floor joist or stud. The reinforcing plate is mounted to the wood member and includes preformed first openings and preformed second openings. The preformed first openings are provided proximate to edges of the reinforcing plate and are dimensioned to allow for attachment members to be inserted therethrough to attach the reinforcing plate to the wood member. The preformed second openings are larger than the first opening and are dimensioned to allow for building materials to extend therethrough. The reinforcing plate resists bending stresses and increase the shearing resistance of the wood member.

1 . A reinforcing plate for use in sistering to a wood stud to create a composite floor joist, the reinforcing plate comprising:
 preformed first openings provided proximate to edges of the reinforcing plate, the first openings configured to allow for attachment members to be inserted therethrough to attach the reinforcing plate to the wood stud;   preformed second openings, the second openings are larger than the first opening and are dimensioned to allow for building materials to extend therethrough;   wherein the reinforcing plate resists bending stresses and increase the shearing resistance of the wood stud.   
     
     
         2 . The reinforcing plate as recited in  claim 1 , wherein the reinforcing plate is a metal plate. 
     
     
         3 . The reinforcing plate as recited in  claim 1 , wherein the first openings extend proximate to a first edge of the reinforcing plate and a second edge of the reinforcing plate. 
     
     
         4 . The reinforcing plate as recited in  claim 1 , wherein the first openings are positioned at predetermined intervals along the length of the reinforcing plate. 
     
     
         5 . The reinforcing plate as recited in  claim 1 , wherein the second openings are spaced equidistant along a longitudinal axis of the reinforcing plate. 
     
     
         6 . The plate as recited in  claim 1 , wherein the second openings are spaced from the first and second edges of the reinforcing plate by at least 2 inches. 
     
     
         7 . A joist or stud used to support a structure, the joist or stud comprising:
 a wood member having a first surface and an oppositely facing second surface, end surfaces extend between the first surface and the second surface, edge surfaces extend between the first surface, the second surface, and the end surfaces;   a rigid reinforcing plate mounted to the first surface of the wood member, the reinforcing plate comprising:
 longitudinal edges positioned proximate to or adjacent to the edge surfaces of the wood member; 
 preformed first openings spaced from the longitudinal edges, the first openings allow for building materials to extend therethrough; 
   wherein the longitudinal edges of the rigid reinforcing plate do not cooperate or interfere with the edge surfaces of the wood member;   wherein the reinforcing plate is mounted to the first surface of the wood member to resist bending stresses applied to the joist or stud and to increase the shearing resistance of the joist or stud.   
     
     
         8 . The joist or stud as recited in  claim 7 , wherein a second reinforcing plate is mounted on the second surface. 
     
     
         9 . The joist or stud as recited in  claim 7 , wherein a longitudinal upper edge of the longitudinal edges of the reinforcing plate is positioned in the same plane as an upper longitudinal edge surface of the edge surface of the wood member and a longitudinal lower edge of the longitudinal edges of the reinforcing plate is positioned in the same plane as a lower longitudinal edge of the edge surface of the wood member. 
     
     
         10 . The joist or stud as recited in  claim 7 , wherein the reinforcing plate is fixedly secured to the wood member to form a composite floor joist or stud. 
     
     
         11 . The joist or stud as recited in  claim 10 , wherein the reinforcing plate is fixedly secured to the wood member by screws. 
     
     
         12 . The joist or stud as recited in  claim 11 , wherein the reinforcing plate is additionally fixedly secured to the wood member by adhesive. 
     
     
         13 . The joist or stud as recited in  claim 7 , wherein the reinforcing plate is a metal plate. 
     
     
         14 . The joist or stud as recited in  claim 7 , wherein preformed second openings are provided proximate to the longitudinal edges of the reinforcing plate, the second openings are to allow attachment members to be inserted therethrough to attach the reinforcing plate to the wood member. 
     
     
         15 . The joist or stud as recited in  claim 14 , wherein the second openings are smaller than the first openings, the second openings are positioned at predetermined intervals along the length of the reinforcing plate. 
     
     
         16 . The joist or stud as recited in  claim 7 , wherein the first openings are spaced along a longitudinal axis of the reinforcing plate to allow sufficient material to be provided across the length and width of the reinforcing plate wherein the integrity and performance of the reinforcing plate is maintained to allow the reinforcing plate to resist the bending stresses applied to the joist or stud without failure of the reinforcing plate or the joist or stud. 
     
     
         17 . A method of sistering a joist or stud, the method comprising:
 mounting a first rigid reinforcing plate to a first surface of a wood member;   inserting conduit through preformed first openings provided in the first rigid reinforcing plate, the first openings being spaced from longitudinal edges of the first rigid reinforcing plate, the longitudinal edges of the first rigid reinforcing plate do not cooperate or interfere with edge surfaces of the wood member;   wherein the first rigid reinforcing plate is mounted to the wood member to resist bending stresses applied to the floor joist or stud and to increase shearing resistance of the joist or stud.   
     
     
         18 . The method of sistering the joist or stud as recited in  claim 17 , comprising:
 adhering the first rigid reinforcing plate to the wood member with an adhesive to form a composite floor joist.   
     
     
         19 . The method of sistering the joist or stud as recited in  claim 17 , comprising:
 inserting mounting members through preformed second openings provided proximate the longitudinal edges of the first rigid reinforcing plate.   
     
     
         20 . The method of sistering the joist or stud as recited in  claim 17 , comprising:
 mounting a second rigid reinforcing plate to a second surface of a wood member;   inserting conduit through preformed first openings provided in the second rigid reinforcing plate, the first openings being spaced from longitudinal edges of the second rigid reinforcing plate, the longitudinal edges of the second rigid reinforcing plate do not cooperate or interfere with the edge surfaces of the wood member;   wherein the second rigid reinforcing plate is mounted to the wood member to resist bending stresses applied to the floor joist or stud and to increase shearing resistance of the joist or stud.   
     
     
         21 . The method of sistering the joist or stud as recited in  claim 20 , comprising:
 adhering the second rigid reinforcing plate to the wood member with an adhesive.   
     
     
         22 . The method of sistering the joist or stud as recited in  claim 20 , comprising:
 inserting mounting members through preformed second openings provided proximate the longitudinal edges of the second rigid reinforcing plate.
