Abstract

A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a voicemail device having a controller to detect a recording of a voicemail message, generate a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) message, wherein the SIP message contains visual voicemail data associated with the recorded voicemail message, and transmit the SIP message to a cordless phone system, wherein the SIP message is received by the cordless phone system over a data port of the cordless phone system, wherein the cordless phone system comprises a base station and at least one cordless communications device, wherein the visual voicemail data is retrieved by the base station, and wherein the visual voicemail data is transmitted by the based station to the at least one cordless communications device by utilizing a cordless wireless access protocol. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

         1 . A method comprising:
generating a notification comprising a session initiation protocol message in response to detecting a triggering event; transmitting the notification to a phone system; receiving a request in response to the notification, the request comprising a uniform resource identifier associated with a voicemail message; and transmitting a transcoded voicemail message associated with the notification and the uniform resource identifier in response to the request.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
transcoding the voice mail message to generate the transcoded voicemail message, the transcoded voicemail message comprising a format compatible with the phone system.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the session initiation protocol message comprises status information associated with the voicemail message.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the session initiation protocol message comprises visual voicemail data associated with the voicemail message.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the visual voicemail data comprises one of a recording time of the voicemail message, an identity of a caller of the voicemail message, and a duration of the voicemail message.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the triggering event comprises one of receiving a new voicemail message, logging out of a voicemail box associated with the phone system, and receiving an indicator of a message count associated with the voicemail box.

7 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the transcoding comprises transcoding the voicemail message from a G.711 format to a G.726 format prior to transmitting the transcoded voicemail message.

         8 . An apparatus comprising:
a processor; and a memory to store computer program instructions, the computer program instructions when executed on the processor cause the processor to perform operations comprising: generating a notification comprising a session initiation protocol message in response to detecting a triggering event; transmitting the notification to a phone system; receiving a request in response to the notification, the request comprising a uniform resource identifier associated with a voicemail message; and transmitting a transcoded voicemail message associated with the notification and the uniform resource identifier in response to the request.

9 . The apparatus of claim 8 , the operations further comprising:
transcoding the voice mail message to generate the transcoded voicemail message, the transcoded voicemail message comprising a format compatible with the phone system.

10 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the session initiation protocol message comprises status information associated with the voicemail message.

11 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the session initiation protocol message comprises visual voicemail data associated with the voicemail message.

12 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the visual voicemail data comprises one of a recording time of the voicemail message, an identity of a caller of the voicemail message, and a duration of the voicemail message.

13 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the triggering event comprises one of receiving a new voicemail message, logging out of a voicemail box associated with the phone system, and receiving an indicator of a message count associated with the voicemail box.

14 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the transcoding comprises transcoding the voicemail message from a G.711 format to a G.726 format prior to transmitting the transcoded voicemail message.

15 . A computer readable medium storing computer program instructions, which, when executed on a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:
generating a notification comprising a session initiation protocol message in response to detecting a triggering event; transmitting the notification to a phone system; receiving a request in response to the notification, the request comprising a uniform resource identifier associated with a voicemail message; and transmitting a transcoded voicemail message associated with the notification and the uniform resource identifier in response to the request.

16 . The computer readable medium of claim 15 , the operations further comprising:
transcoding the voice mail message to generate the transcoded voicemail message, the transcoded voicemail message comprising a format compatible with the phone system.

17 . The computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the session initiation protocol message comprises status information associated with the voicemail message.

18 . The computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the session initiation protocol message comprises visual voicemail data associated with the voicemail message.

19 . The computer readable medium of claim 18 , wherein the visual voicemail data comprises one of a recording time of the voicemail message, an identity of a caller of the voicemail message, and a duration of the voicemail message.

20 . The computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the triggering event comprises one of receiving a new voicemail message, logging out of a voicemail box associated with the phone system, and receiving an indicator of a message count associated with the voicemail box.
