Claims

Abstract

Protective barrier for laparoscopy is provided and comprises bag with closed bottom, wall(s), and open end. Bag may comprise drawstring and/or optional flexible stay(s), in internal channel around periphery of open end of bag. Bag may optionally comprise self-sealing communication in closed bottom. Furthermore, bag may also include flexible ring or other shape positioned inside bag and tube passing through communication in closed bottom. Protective barrier is configured to be collapsed, rolled, and/or folded into a size that can pass through an opening, such as a trocar. Protective barrier, when deployed in the peritoneal cavity, may be used to collect tissue, tissue parts, blood and/or other fluid that may spray during Morcellation or other laparoscopic procedure. After completion of the procedure, protective barrier can be collapsed, rolled or folded at a size that can be easily removed from the peritoneal cavity.

I claim: 
     
         1 . A bag to collect tissue debris and blood during a surgical procedure comprising:
 a collapsible, protective barrier comprising a closed bottom, an open edge, and wall between said closed bottom and said open end; and   at least one stay provided adjacent said open edge and configured maintain a shape;   wherein said bag is configured when collapsed to pass through a trocar into a peritoneal cavity and then deployed within said peritoneal cavity to form a temporary basin in which tissue may be placed or blood or tissue parts collected.   
     
     
         2 . The bag of  claim 1  wherein said at least one stay comprises at least one tab secured adjacent to said open edge. 
     
     
         3 . The bag of  claim 1  wherein said at least one stay comprises a rigid and flexible material. 
     
     
         4 . The bag of  claim 1  comprising at least one marker provided on an inner surface of said closed bottom. 
     
     
         5 . The bag of  claim 1  comprising a channel provided around said edge of said barrier. 
     
     
         6 . The bag of  claim 5  wherein said at least one stay or a drawstring is provided within said channel. 
     
     
         7 . The bag of  claim 1  comprising a cylindrical sheath having a first open end, a second open end, and a flexible O-ring integrated into said first open end. 
     
     
         8 . The bag of  claim 7  wherein said closed bottom comprises a communication through which said flexible O-ring can pass through. 
     
     
         9 . A process for positioning a collection bag in a peritoneal cavity comprising:
 collapsing a protective barrier into a shape and size configured to pass through a trocar, said protective barrier comprising:
 a closed bottom, an open edge, and wall between said closed bottom and said open end; 
   passing said protective barrier, now collapsed, through said trocar into a peritoneal cavity distended by positive air pressure; and   deploying said protective barrier as a temporary basin within said peritoneal cavity,   wherein said temporary basin collects tissue, tissue pieces, and blood that is sprayed during a laparoscopic procedure used to remove said tissue, said tissue pieces, and said blood, thereby protecting said peritoneal cavity from exposure to said tissue, said tissue pieces, and said blood.   
     
     
         10 . The process of  claim 9  wherein said protective barrier comprises a sealable communication through said closed bottom. 
     
     
         11 . The process of  claim 10  comprising a cylindrical sheath having a first open end with a flexible O-ring integrated therein and a second open end, whereby said flexible O-ring is positioned inside said protective barrier and a portion of said sheath is positioned in said sealable communication. 
     
     
         12 . The process of  claim 11  wherein said second open end is passed through an os of a cervix having a uterus removed. 
     
     
         13 . A method for collecting tissue, tissue debris, and blood during a Morcellation procedure comprising:
 deploying a protective barrier in a peritoneal cavity after passing said protective barrier through an opening into said peritoneal cavity, said protective barrier comprising:
 a closed bottom, an open edge, and wall between said closed bottom and said open end; 
   placing tissue or organ to be removed by morcellation on an interior surface of said closed bottom of said protective barrier;   removing said tissue or organ and blood with a Morcellation device;   collapsing said protective barrier around residual tissue pieces and blood; and   removing said protective barrier through said opening into said peritoneal cavity;   wherein said protective barrier when deployed is used to collect said tissue, residual tissue pieces, and said blood that may be sprayed or falls during Morcellation, thereby protecting said peritoneal cavity from exposure to said tissue, said tissue pieces, and said blood.   
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 13  wherein said opening is formed by a trocar positioned through an abdominal wall. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 13  wherein said Morcellation device is inserted through a communication reinforced with a self-sealing film in said closed bottom of said protective barrier. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 13  wherein said opening is formed by a trocar positioned through an os of a cervix having a uterus removed therefrom. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 16  comprising inserting a first open end of a cylindrical sheath having a flexible O-ring integrated therein through said opening into said peritoneal cavity and through a sealable communication in said closed bottom of said protective barrier, whereby said flexible O-ring is positioned inside said protective barrier and a portion of said sheath is positioned in said sealable communication. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 17  comprising inserting said Morcellation device through said cylindrical sheath and said sealable communication and positioned in said closed bottom of said protective barrier. 
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 17  further comprising collapsing said protective barrier to contain residual tissue and blood. 
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 19  further comprising removing said protective barrier that is collapsed from said peritoneal cavity through said opening.
