Methods and systems for recommending packages of domain names for registration

Abstract

A system and method are presented for recommending packages of domain names. One or more computer servers receive a query including at least one keyword from a user. A business category associated with the user is identified and a first ranking of top level domain names for the business category is identified. A package of candidate domain names is generated containing a candidate domain name for each top level domain in the first ranking of top level domain names. The package of candidate domain names relevant to the query is displayed for selection and registration by the user.

The inventions claimed are: 
     
         1 . A method, comprising:
 receiving, by one or more computer servers via a communications network, a query including at least one keyword, the query being submitted by a user via a client device;   querying, by the one or more computer servers, a database encoding a user account of the user to determine a business category associated with the user;   accessing, by the one or more computer servers, a data base storing a plurality of domain name registration maps to identify a first domain name registration map for the business category, the first domain name registration map identifying a number of domain name registrations in each of a plurality of top level domain names;   determining a first set of top level domain names using the first domain name registration map;   for each top level domain name in the first set of top level domain names, generating a candidate domain name;   generating, by the one or more computer servers, a package of candidate domain names including a candidate domain name for each top level domain name in the first set of top level domain names; and   displaying, by the one or more computer servers, the package of candidate domain names relevant to the query for selection and registration by the user.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , including:
 receiving, in response to displaying the package of candidate domain names, a request from the user to register the package of candidate domain names; and   registering, by the one or more computer servers, each domain name in the package of candidate domain names to the user.   
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein generating the package of candidate domain names includes for one of the top level domain names in the first set of top level domain names, translating the at least one keyword into a language associated with the one of the top level domain names. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , including:
 identifying, by the one or more computer servers, a location identifier associated with the user; and   wherein the first domain name registration map is at least partially determined by the location identifier.   
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 4 , wherein the location identifier identifies a geographical region. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 4 , wherein the location identifier includes an address of the user or a business of the user or a phone or telecommunications service provider. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 4 , including:
 identifying one or more restricted words associated with a region containing a location identified by the location identifier; and   displaying an alert to the user when one or more of the candidate domain names includes the one or more restricted words.   
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the query includes a request for a web page and including determining, by the one or more computer servers, one or more keywords in the query by parsing a uniform resource locator of the web page. 
     
     
         9 . A method, comprising:
 receiving, by one or more computer servers via a communications network, a query including at least one keyword, the query being submitted by a user via a client device;   querying, by the one or more computer servers, a database encoding a user account of the user to determine a business category associated with the user;   identifying a first set of top level domain names associated with the business category;   generating, by the one or more computer servers, a package of candidate domain names containing a candidate domain name for each top level domain in the first set of top level domain names; and   displaying, by the one or more computer servers, the package of candidate domain names relevant to the query for selection and registration by the user.   
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 9 , including:
 receiving, in response to displaying the package of candidate domain names, a request from the user to register the package of candidate domain names; and   registering, by the one or more computer servers, each domain name in the package of candidate domain names to the user.   
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein generating the package of candidate domain names includes translating the at least one keyword into a language associated with a domain name in the first set of top level domain names. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 9 , including:
 identifying, by the one or more computer servers, a location identifier associated with the user; and   wherein the first set of top level domain names is at least partially determined by the location identifier.   
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 12 , including:
 identifying one or more restricted words associated with a region containing a location identified by the location identifier; and   displaying an alert to the user when one or more of the candidate domain names includes the one or more restricted words.   
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein the query includes a request for a web page and including identifying, by the one or more computer servers, one or more keywords in the query by parsing a uniform resource locator of the web page. 
     
     
         15 . A system, comprising:
 one or more computer servers communicatively coupled to a communications network and configured to perform the steps of:
 receiving a query including at least one keyword, the query being submitted by a user via a client device; 
 querying a database encoding a user account of the user to determine a business category associated with the user; 
 identifying a first set of top level domain names associated with the business category; 
 generating a package of candidate domain names containing a candidate domain name for each top level domain in the first set of top level domain names; and 
 displaying the package of candidate domain names relevant to the query for selection and registration by the user. 
   
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 15 , wherein the one or more computer servers are configured to perform the steps of:
 receiving, in response to displaying the package of candidate domain names, a request from the user to register the package of candidate domain names; and   registering each domain name in the package of candidate domain names to the user.   
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 15 , wherein the one or more computer servers are configured to perform the steps of:
 generating the package of candidate domain names by translating the at least one keyword into a language associated with a domain name in the first set of top level domain names.   
     
     
         18 . The system of  claim 15 , wherein the one or more computer servers are configured to perform the steps of:
 identifying a location identifier associated with the user; and   wherein the first set of top level domain names is at least partially determined by the location identifier.   
     
     
         19 . The system of  claim 15 , wherein the one or more computer servers are configured to perform the steps of:
 identifying one or more restricted words associated with a region containing a location identified by the location identifier; and   displaying an alert to the user when one or more of the candidate domain names includes the one or more restricted words.   
     
     
         20 . The system of  claim 15 , wherein the query includes a request for a web page and the one or more computer servers are configured to perform the steps of identifying one or more keywords in the query by parsing a uniform resource locator of the web page.
