Abstract

Systems, devices, and methods are provided for the management of multiple sensor control devices and/or multiple reader devices in an in vivo analyte monitoring environment, and also for resolving conflicts when merging data collected by different reader devices.

         118 . A method of communicating in an analyte monitoring system, comprising:
 activating a sensor control device at an activation time with a dedicated-use reader device, wherein a second reader device is not permitted to join communication with the sensor control device after a predetermined time period after the activation time, the predetermined time period being less than an operating life of the sensor control device; and   joining, by the second reader device, communication with the sensor control device during the predetermined time period, wherein the second reader device is a smart phone.   
     
     
         119 . The method of  claim 118 , wherein the dedicated-use reader device activates the sensor control device such that the dedicated-use reader device knows the activation time. 
     
     
         120 . The method of  claim 118 , wherein activating the sensor control device comprises powering on the sensor control device. 
     
     
         121 . The method of  claim 118 , wherein activating the sensor control device comprises causing the sensor control device to exit a sleep state. 
     
     
         122 . The method of  claim 118 , further comprising:
 transmitting, by the sensor control device while positioned on a body of a subject with an in vivo sensor positioned in the body of the subject, analyte data of the subject to the dedicated-use reader device and to the smart phone.   
     
     
         123 . The method of  claim 122 , wherein the sensor control device transmits the analyte data according to a near field communication (NFC) protocol. 
     
     
         124 . The method of  claim 118 , wherein the predetermined time period is substantially less than the operating life of the sensor control device. 
     
     
         125 . The method of  claim 118 , wherein the predetermined time period is less than five percent of the operating life of the sensor control device. 
     
     
         126 . The method of  claim 118 , wherein the predetermined time period is less than one percent of the operating life of the sensor control device. 
     
     
         127 . The method of  claim 118 , wherein the operating life is fourteen days and the predetermined time period is one hour. 
     
     
         128 . The method of  claim 118 , wherein the sensor control device comprises an in vivo sensor, and wherein the predetermined time period is an initialization time period of the in vivo sensor. 
     
     
         129 . The method of  claim 128 , wherein the initialization time period is a period during which chemistry of the in vivo sensor stabilizes after activation. 
     
     
         130 . The method of  claim 128 , wherein no analyte data from the sensor control device is displayed on the dedicated-use reader device and the smart phone until after the initialization time period. 
     
     
         131 . The method of  claim 118 , wherein the dedicated-use reader device is prevented from joining communication with another sensor control device that has already been activated. 
     
     
         132 . A method of communicating in an analyte monitoring system, comprising:
 activating a sensor control device at an activation time, wherein the sensor control device is permitted to communicate with a first reader device and wherein a second reader device is not permitted to join communication with the sensor control device after a predetermined time period after the activation time, the predetermined time period being less than an operating life of the sensor control device; and   joining, by the second reader device, communication with the sensor control device during the predetermined time period, wherein the second reader device is a smart phone.   
     
     
         133 . The method of  claim 132 , wherein the first reader device is a dedicated-use reader device. 
     
     
         134 . The method of  claim 133 , wherein the dedicated-use reader device activates the sensor control device. 
     
     
         135 . The method of  claim 132 , wherein activating the sensor control device comprises powering on the sensor control device or causing the sensor control device to exit a sleep state. 
     
     
         136 . The method of  claim 132 , further comprising:
 transmitting, by the sensor control device while positioned on a body of a subject with an in vivo sensor positioned in the body of the subject, analyte data of the subject to the dedicated-use reader device and to the smart phone after the predetermined time period.
