Claims

Abstract

A display device includes a display panel, a backlight under the display panel, and an adhesive placed so as to extend over a side face of the display panel and a side face of the backlight. An outer face of the adhesive opposite to a face of the adhesive bonded to the side face of the display panel and the side face of the backlight is formed as a flat face along one or both of the side face of the display panel and the side face of the backlight.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A display device comprising:
 a display panel;   a backlight under the display panel; and   an adhesive placed so as to extend over a side face of the display panel and a side face of the backlight,   wherein an outer face of the adhesive opposite to a face of the adhesive bonded to the side face of the display panel and the side face of the backlight is formed as a flat face along one or both of the side face of the display panel and the side face of the backlight.   
     
     
         2 . The display device according to  claim 1 , wherein a portion of the adhesive from the outer face to the face bonded to the display panel and a portion of the adhesive from the outer face to the face bonded to the backlight differ in thickness. 
     
     
         3 . The display device according to  claim 1 , wherein:
 the display panel includes:
 a pair of substrates between which a liquid crystal layer is put; and 
 a polarizer which is placed on a backlight side of the pair of substrates and which includes a side face situated on an inner periphery side of side faces of the pair of substrates; 
   the side face of the display panel includes the side faces of the pair of substrates and the side face of the polarizer;   the backlight includes a housing case including:
 a bottom; and 
 a wall which rises from a peripheral edge of the bottom toward a display panel side and which functions as the side face of the backlight; 
   the wall is in contact with the polarizer or opposed to the polarizer with a narrow space therebetween on the inner periphery side of the side face of the polarizer; and   the adhesive is placed so as to extend over the side face of the polarizer and the wall.   
     
     
         4 . The display device according to  claim 1 , wherein:
 the display panel includes:
 a pair of substrates between which a liquid crystal layer is put; and 
 a polarizer which is placed on a backlight side of the pair of substrates and which includes a side face situated on an outer periphery side of side faces of the pair of substrates; 
   the side face of the display panel includes the side faces of the pair of substrates and the side face of the polarizer;   the backlight includes a housing case including:
 a bottom; and 
 a wall which rises from a peripheral edge of the bottom toward a display panel side and which functions as the side face of the backlight; 
   the wall is in contact with the polarizer or opposed to the polarizer with a narrow space therebetween on the outer periphery side of the side faces of the pair of substrates; and   the adhesive is placed so as to extend over the side face of the polarizer and the wall.   
     
     
         5 . The display device according to  claim 1 , wherein:
 the display panel includes:
 a pair of substrates between which a liquid crystal layer is put; and 
 a polarizer which is placed on a backlight side of the pair of substrates and which includes a side face situated on an outer periphery side of side faces of the pair of substrates; 
   the side face of the display panel includes the side faces of the pair of substrates and the side face of the polarizer;   the backlight includes:
 a light guide; 
 a frame which is placed around the light guide and which functions as the side face of the backlight; and 
 an optical sheet placed on a side of the light guide on which the display panel is situated; 
   an outer face of the frame is situated outside the side faces of the pair of substrates;   the frame and the optical sheet are stuck to the polarizer with a double-faced tape; and   the adhesive is placed so as to extend over the polarizer, the double-faced tape, and the frame.   
     
     
         6 . The display device according to  claim 1 , wherein:
 the display panel includes:
 a pair of substrates between which a liquid crystal layer is put; and 
 a polarizer which is placed on a backlight side of the pair of substrates and which includes a side face situated on an inner periphery side of side faces of the pair of substrates; 
   the side face of the display panel includes the side faces of the pair of substrates and the side face of the polarizer;   the backlight includes a housing case including:
 a bottom; and 
 a wall which rises from a peripheral edge of the bottom toward a display panel side and which functions as the side face of the backlight; 
   the wall is opposed to a portion of the pair of substrates where the polarizer is not placed and an upper end face of the wall is situated on a side of the polarizer on which the pair of substrates are placed, beyond the backlight; and   the adhesive is placed so as to extend over the side faces of the pair of substrates and the wall.   
     
     
         7 . The display device according to  claim 1 , wherein:
 the display panel includes:
 a pair of substrates between which a liquid crystal layer is put; and 
 a polarizer which is placed on a backlight side of the pair of substrates and which includes a side face situated on an inner periphery side of side faces of the pair of substrates; 
   the side face of the display panel includes the side faces of the pair of substrates and the side face of the polarizer;   the backlight includes a housing case including:
 a bottom; and 
 a wall which rises from a peripheral edge of the bottom toward a display panel side and which functions as the side face of the backlight; 
   the wall is opposed to a portion of the pair of substrates where the polarizer is not placed and an upper end face of the wall is situated on a side of the polarizer on which the pair of substrates are placed, beyond the backlight;   a double-faced tape is placed between the wall and the pair of substrates; and   the adhesive is placed so as to extend over the side faces of the pair of substrates, the double-faced tape, and the wall.   
     
     
         8 . A bonding method comprising:
 placing a display panel over a backlight in a state in which a side face of the display panel and a side face of the backlight are put side by side;   placing an adhesive over the side face of the display panel and the side face of the backlight;   hardening the adhesive to a determined strength; and   pressing a flattening member against a side of the adhesive opposite to a face of the adhesive bonded to the side face of the display panel and the side face of the backlight to flatten the side of the adhesive.   
     
     
         9 . The bonding method according to  claim 8 , wherein the adhesive is placed in a state in which the side face of the display panel and the side face of the backlight over which the display panel is placed are faced upward. 
     
     
         10 . A bonding method comprising:
 placing a display panel over a backlight in a state in which a side face of the display panel and a side face of the backlight are put side by side;   applying an adhesive to a flat face of a flattening member which is formed so that the adhesive is peelable;   pressing the adhesive against the side face of the display panel and the side face of the backlight with the flattening member to bond the adhesive to the side face of the display panel and the side face of the backlight;   hardening the adhesive to a determined strength; and   peeling the adhesive from the flattening member.
