Abstract

A child containment device and a mattress support assembly for a child containment device providing a generally flat mattress configuration under load of a child supported thereon; a multi-paneled mattress for a child containment device allowing repositioning of mattress panels between an expanded state and a compact state, and wherein in the expanded state, structural couplings maintain the mattress in a generally flat configuration; and a chamfered corner arrangement for resisting curling of a mattress for a child containment device.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A mattress for a child containment device, the mattress comprising a plurality of mattress panels and structural couplings between two or more of the plurality of mattress panels, the structural couplings allowing repositioning of the plurality of mattress panels between an expanded state and a compact state, and wherein in the expanded state, the structural couplings maintain the mattress in a generally flat configuration. 
     
     
         2 . The mattress of  claim 1 , wherein the structural couplings between two or more of the plurality of mattress panels comprise hinged joints between adjacent mattress panels. 
     
     
         3 . The mattress of  claim 1 , further comprising a flexible outer mattress shell for covering the plurality of mattress panels. 
     
     
         4 . The mattress of  claim 1 , further comprising at least two sides defining a corner therebetween, and a chamfered corner assembly at the corner for resisting curling. 
     
     
         5 . The mattress of  claim 1 , wherein the plurality of mattress panels are substantially rigid and are hingedly connected to one another by the structural couplings. 
     
     
         6 . The mattress of  claim 5 , wherein the plurality of mattress panels further comprise integral stop surfaces configured to interengage at interfaces between adjacent mattress panels to prevent the mattress panels from rotating more than about 180° with respect to one another in the expanded state and maintain the mattress in the generally flat configuration under weight of a child placed thereon. 
     
     
         7 . The mattress of  claim 6 , wherein the mattress panels comprise a cushioned layer to provide a comfortable support surface for the child placed thereon. 
     
     
         8 . The mattress of  claim 6 , further comprising a liner configured to receive the hingedly connected plurality of mattress panels therein. 
     
     
         9 . A mattress comprising a plurality of substantially rigid mattress panels hingedly coupled to one another by hinge mechanisms, whereby the mattress is convertible between an expanded state and a collapsed state. 
     
     
         10 . The mattress of  claim 9 , wherein the mattress panels comprise integral stop surfaces configured to interengage between adjacent mattress panels to support the mattress in a generally planar configuration in the expanded state. 
     
     
         11 . The mattress of  claim 10 , wherein the integral stop surfaces prevent the mattress panels from rotating more than about 180° with respect to one another in the expanded state. 
     
     
         12 . The mattress of  claim 9 , further comprising at least two sides defining a corner therebetween, and a chamfered corner assembly at the corner for resisting curling. 
     
     
         13 . The mattress of  claim 9 , wherein the mattress panels comprise a cushioned layer to provide a comfortable support surface for a child placed thereon. 
     
     
         14 . The mattress of  claim 9 , further comprising a liner configured to receive the hingedly coupled mattress panels therein. 
     
     
         15 . A child containment and support device comprising:
 a play-yard comprising a floor and a plurality of sidewalls;   a mattress comprising a plurality of substantially rigid mattress panels repositionably coupled to one another, allowing the mattress to move between an expanded state and a compact state; and   a mattress support assembly for supporting the mattress in its expanded state at a distance above the floor within the play-yard.   
     
     
         16 . The child containment and support device of  claim 15 , wherein the mattress panels are hingedly coupled to one another. 
     
     
         17 . The child containment and support device of  claim 16 , wherein the mattress panels comprise integral stop surfaces configured to engage between adjacent mattress panels to support the mattress in a generally flat configuration in the expanded state. 
     
     
         18 . The child containment and support device of  claim 17 , wherein the integral stop surfaces prevent the mattress panels from rotating more than about 180° with respect to one another in the expanded state. 
     
     
         19 . The child containment and support device of  claim 15 , wherein the mattress further comprises at least two sides defining a corner therebetween, and a chamfered corner assembly at the corner for resisting curling. 
     
     
         20 . The child containment and support device of  claim 15 , wherein the mattress further comprises a cushioned layer to provide a comfortable support surface for a child placed thereon. 
     
     
         21 . The child containment and support device of  claim 15 , further comprising a liner configured to receive the repositionably coupled mattress panels therein.
