Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a method and system for generating a webpage using one or more terms in a hierarchical taxonomy. Specifically, embodiments provide for identifying an item in a database where the item is associated with at least one term in a term set having a hierarchical structure. A uniform resource locator is generated for the webpage using the at least one term and the hierarchical structure associated with the at least one term. An identifier associated with the item is then determined and appended to the generated uniform resource locator.

         21 . A system, comprising:
 at least one processor; and memory coupled to the at least one processor, the memory comprising computer executable instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, performs a method comprising:
 identifying a term set comprising a first term;
 associating the first term with a first friendly URL for a webpage;
 mapping the first friendly URL to a first physical URL;
 using the first physical URL to generate a second physical URL comprising a first set of term context parameters, wherein the first set of term context parameters is associated with at least the first term
 detecting a change to the first term; and
 in response to detecting the change, automatically applying the change to the first friendly URL.

         22 . The system of claim 21 , wherein the term set is structured hierarchically such that a child term of a parent term in the term set inherits a physical URL of the parent term.

         23 . The system of claim 21 , wherein the term set comprises a second term and a third term, wherein the third term is a child term of the first term.

         24 . The system of claim 23 , wherein the first set of term context parameters comprises a first set of term identifiers associated with the first term and the third term, wherein the first set of term identifiers is appended to the second physical URL.

         25 . The system of claim 23 , the method further comprising:
 associating the second term with a second friendly URL for the webpage such that a change to the second term is automatically applied to the second friendly URL; mapping the second friendly URL to the first physical URL; and using the first physical URL to generate a third physical URL comprising a second set of term context parameters, wherein the second set of term context parameters is associated with at least the second term.

         26 . The system of claim 25 , wherein the second set of term context parameters comprises a second set of term identifiers associated with the second term, wherein the second set of term identifiers is appended to the third physical URL.

         27 . The system of claim 25 , wherein the second physical URL and the third physical URL are generated using a URL rewriting operation implemented by a web server.

         28 . The system of claim 25 , wherein the first friendly URL and the second friendly URL are concise representations of the first physical URL and the second physical URL, respectively.

         29 . The system of claim 25 , wherein, when the first term is removed from the term set:
 the first friendly URL is automatically removed; the second friendly URL is not automatically removed; and the first physical URL is not automatically removed.

         30 . The system of claim 21 , wherein the term set comprises a fourth term.

         31 . The system of claim 30 , the method further comprising:
 associating the fourth term with a third friendly URL for the webpage such that a change to the fourth term is automatically applied to the third friendly URL; mapping the third friendly URL to a fourth physical URL; and using the fourth physical URL to generate a fifth physical URL comprising a third set of term context parameters, wherein the third set of term context parameters is associated with at least the fourth term.

         32 . The system of claim 23 , wherein the third set of term context parameters comprises a third set of term identifiers associated with the fourth term, wherein the third set of term identifiers is appended to the fifth physical URL.

         33 . A method comprising:
 identifying a term set comprising a first term; associating the first term with a first friendly URL for a webpage such that a change to the first term is automatically applied to the first friendly URL; mapping the first friendly URL to a first physical URL; and using the first physical URL to generate a second physical URL comprising a first set of term context parameters, wherein the first set of term context parameters is associated with at least the first term.

         34 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the term set is structured hierarchically such that a child term of a parent term in the term set inherits a physical URL of the parent term.

         35 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the term set comprises a second term and a third term, wherein the third term is a child term of the first term.

         36 . The method of claim 35 , the method further comprising:
 associating the second term with a second friendly URL for the webpage such that a change to the second term is automatically applied to the second friendly URL; mapping the second friendly URL to the first physical URL; and using the first physical URL to generate a third physical URL comprising a second set of term context parameters, wherein the second set of term context parameters is associated with at least the second term.

         37 . The method of claim 35 , the method further comprising:
 associating the third term with a third friendly URL for the webpage such that a change to the third term is automatically applied to the third friendly URL; mapping the third friendly URL to the first physical URL; and using the first physical URL to generate a fourth physical URL comprising a third set of term context parameters, wherein the third set of term context parameters is associated with at least the third term.

         38 . The system of claim 37 , wherein the first friendly URL and the third friendly URL are concise representations of the first physical URL.

         39 . The system of claim 37 , wherein, when the first term is removed from the term set:
 the first friendly URL is automatically removed; the second friendly URL is not automatically removed; and the third friendly URL is automatically removed.

         40 . A computer-readable storage medium encoding computer executable instructions which, when executed by at least one processor, performs a method comprising:
 identifying a term set comprising a first term; associating the first term with a first friendly URL for a webpage such that a change to the first term is automatically applied to the first friendly URL; mapping the first friendly URL to a first physical URL; and using the first physical URL to generate a second physical URL comprising a first set of term context parameters, wherein the first set of term context parameters is associated with at least the first term.
