. A method of treating or preventing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) comprising administering to an individual afflicted with COPD or at risk of developing COPD a therapeutically effective amount of type V collagen.

. The method of claim 44 , wherein the individual has emphysema or chronic obstructive bronchitis.

. The method of claim 44 , wherein the therapeutically effective amount of type V collagen is administered to the individual by a route selected from the group consisting of oral administration, intravenous administration, intrapulmonary instillation, administration by inhalation, and intramuscular administration.

. The method of claim 44 , wherein the therapeutically effective amount of type V collagen is between 0.5 mg and 1.0 mg per day.

. The method of claim 44 , wherein the therapeutically effective amount of type V collagen is between 0.001 mg and 500 mg per day.

. The method of claim 44 , wherein the therapeutically effective amount of type V collagen is between 0.01 and 5 mg per day.

. The method of claim 44 , wherein the therapeutically effective amount of type V collagen is between 5.1 mg and 8.0 mg per day.

. The method of claim 44 , wherein the therapeutically effective amount of type V collagen is administered daily as a single dose.

. The method of claim 44 , comprising co-administering a bronchodilator.
