Abstract
A method and apparatus for pleating or otherwise shaping a web are described herein. The method and apparatus may have numerous applications. In some embodiments, the method and apparatus are used in the formation, filling, and sealing of unit dose packages for consumer products. A method and apparatus for forming sealing two moving webs together, which webs have portions that are non-planar are also described herein.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . A method of sealing two moving webs of material together, which webs of material have portions which are non-planar, said method comprising the steps of:
a) feeding a first web of material and a second web of material into an apparatus in a machine direction, wherein said first and second webs of material have a length oriented in the machine direction and a width oriented in a cross-machine direction, wherein said first and second webs of material are fed through said apparatus generally parallel to each other along a portion of their length, and wherein at least one of said first and second webs of material has non-planar portions formed across the width of said at least one web; b) providing a component having a web-contacting surface configured to contact at least one of the two moving webs, said web-contacting surface having at least one recess; c) forcing at least portions of said webs into at the least one recess in the web-contacting surface in order to stretch and flatten at least some of the non-planar portions in the webs; and d) sealing portions of said first and second webs of material together across the flattened portions; wherein said at least one recess is positioned such that said at least one recess does not seal said two moving webs.
2 . The method of claim 1 wherein said non-planar portions have fold lines that are generally oriented in the machine direction.
3 . The method of claim 1 wherein said apparatus is a multiple lane package forming apparatus, and said first and second webs of material have at least two product doses therebetween, wherein said product doses are spaced apart in the cross-machine direction.
4 . The method of claim 1 wherein when the webs are together, said webs have one side that is adjacent the component having at least one recess in its web-contacting surface and one side that is opposite the component having at least one recess in its web-contacting surface, and the step (c) of forcing at least portions of said webs into at least one recess in the web-contacting surface comprises contacting the side of the web that is opposite to said component having at least one recess in its web-contacting surface with a component having at least one projection that mates with a recess in the web-contacting surface of said first component.
5 . The method of claim 4 wherein said projection comprises a projecting element that is spring-loaded and the spring loaded projection contacts the portions of the webs and forces them into the recess.
6 . The method of claim 1 wherein the step (b) comprises providing a pair of opposing components, comprising a first component and a second component, each of which components has a web-contacting surface with at least one recess in its web-contacting surface, and each has at least one projection on its web-contacting surface, wherein the components are arranged so that a projection on the web-contacting surface of one of said components mates with a recess on the web-contacting surface of the opposing component, and when the webs are together, said webs are between the web-contacting surfaces of the first and second components, and the step (c) of forcing at least portions of said webs into at least one recess in the web-contacting surface comprises bringing at least one of the first and second components toward the other so that a projection on the web-contacting surface of one of said components mates with a recess on the web-contacting surface of the opposing component when the non-planar portions of at least one of said webs are between the web-contacting surfaces of the first and second components.
7 . The method of claim 1 wherein said step (d) of sealing portions of said first and second webs of material together comprises forming a cross-machine direction oriented seal across said webs of material.
8 . The method of claim 7 wherein step (d) takes a period of time for the seal to finish setting, and steps (c) and (d) can occur with step (c) taking place before step (d), or steps (c) and (d) taking place simultaneously, provided that the step (c) of forcing at least portions of said webs into at least one recess in the web-contacting surface in order to stretch and flatten at least some of the non-planar portions in the webs occurs before the seal formed in said step (d) has finished setting.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
