Abstract

A floating water skimming device for collecting debris and related floating material from the surface of water includes structural floatation elements and a collection screen. The skimming device includes an elongated central member having a middle portion, a first end and a second end, a collection screen connected to the elongated central member, and a pole attachment element pivotably attached to the elongated central member. The collection screen and the central member define a first basin and a second basin for collecting debris therein.

Claims

We claim:

1 . A floating water skimming device for collecting debris and related floating material from the surface of water, the skimming device comprising:
an elongated central member having a middle portion, a first end and a second end; a collection screen connected to the elongated central member, the collection screen and the central member defining a first basin and a second basin; and a pole attachment element pivotably attached to the elongated central member.

2 . The floating water skimming device of claim 1 , wherein the elongated central member includes an outer surface and a central cavity, the central member having a generally parallelepiped-shape.

3 . The floating water skimming device of claim 2 , wherein the central cavity within the elongated central member is partially or wholly filled with a buoyant material.

4 . The floating water skimming device of claim 1 , wherein the pole attachment element has a substantially cylindrical shape.

5 . The floating water skimming device of claim 1 , further comprising:
a pole connected to the pole attachment element.

6 . The floating water skimming device of claim 5 , wherein the pole is removable from the pole attachment element.

7 . The floating water skimming device of claim 1 , wherein the pole attachment element is configured to lock in place at predetermined angles.

8 . The floating water skimming device of claim 1 , wherein the collection screen is constructed of one of a metallic mesh and a polymeric mesh material.

9 . The floating water skimming device of claim 1 , further comprising:
a first lateral edge element mounted to a first edge of the collection screen, wherein the first lateral edge element is constructed of a buoyant material.

10 . The floating water skimming device of claim 9 , further comprising:
a second lateral edge element mounted a second edge of the collection screen, wherein the lateral second edge element is constructed of a buoyant material.

11 . The floating water skimming device of claim 1 , wherein the collection screen is narrower near the first end and the second end of the elongated central member and wider near the middle portion of the elongated central member.

12 . The floating water skimming device of claim 1 , further comprising:
a first enclosing element mounted to the first end of the elongated central member, wherein the first enclosing element partially defines the first basin.

13 . The floating water skimming device of claim 12 , further comprising:
a second enclosing element mounted the second end of the elongated central member, wherein the second enclosing element partially defines the second basin.

14 . The floating water skimming device of claim 13 , wherein the elongated central member, the first enclosing element and the second enclosing element define a substantially I-shape.

15 . The floating water skimming device of claim 1 , further comprising:
a pole securing element attached to the elongated central member capable of selectively securing and releasing the pole.

16 . A floating water skimming device for collecting debris and related floating material from the surface of water, the skimming device comprising:
an elongated central member having a middle portion, a first end and a second end, the elongated central member having a parallelepiped-shape; a collection screen connected to a bottom surface of the elongated central member, the collection screen and the central member defining a first basin and a second basin; a first enclosing element mounted to the first end; a second enclosing element mounted to the second end, the first and second enclosing elements being buoyant, the elongated central element, the first enclosing element, the second enclosing element and the collection screen defining a first basin on a first side of the elongated central element and a second basin on a second side of the elongated central element; and a pole attachment element pivotably attached to the elongated central member.

17 . The floating water skimming device of claim 16 , wherein the collection screen is constructed of a plastic mesh material.

18 . The floating water skimming device of claim 16 , further comprising:
an edge element connected to an edge of the collection screen

19 . The floating water skimming device of claim 16 , wherein the first and second enclosing elements are comprised of hollow containers.

20 . The floating water skimming device of claim 16 , wherein the collection screen has a curved edge spaced from the elongated central member.
