System and method for organizing messages
Abstract
A system and method for sorting messages within an interface including providing a navigational menu with at least three menu options of at least three message collections, the menu options ordered according to an ordered horizontal virtual arrangement of a set of message collections; upon receiving user selection of one of the menu options, activating the message collection corresponding to the user selected menu option, which comprises—displaying the message collection of the selected menu option and virtually positioning the remaining set of message collections off screen; within the active message collection of the set of message collections, detecting a gesture swipe in a horizontal direction; selecting a sorting option corresponding to a message collection virtually positioned in the horizontal direction relative to the active message collection; and transferring the message to the message collection of the selected sorting option.

27 . A computer-implemented method, comprising:
presenting a user interface including a message-list pane that displays a list of messages including a first message and a second message; receiving a first user input from a user input device that controls a location of an on-screen cursor, wherein the user input indicates a drag operation on the first message in a first direction over a first distance from a starting cursor location to a first current cursor location, and wherein the first distance is associated with a first action to be performed on the first message; presenting, at the user interface, a first action-option menu including a plurality of first options associated with the first action; receiving a second user input from the user input device, wherein the second user input indicates a drag operation on the second message in the first direction at a second distance from the starting cursor location to a second current cursor location, and wherein the second distance is longer than the first distance and associated with a second action to be performed on the second message; and presenting, at the user interface, a second action-option menu including a plurality of second options associated with the second action.
28 . The method of claim 27 , further comprising:
receiving an additional first user input indicating a first action option from the plurality of first options; and performing the first action option on the first message.
29 . The method of claim 27 , further comprising:
detecting, while the first user input indicates the drag operation from the starting cursor location, the first distance between the starting cursor location and the first current cursor location.
30 . The method of claim 27 , further comprising:
receiving an additional second user input indicating a second action option from the plurality of second options; and performing the second action option on the second message.
31 . The method of claim 27 , further comprising:
detecting, while the second user input indicates the drag operation from the starting cursor location, the second distance between the starting cursor location and the second current cursor location.
32 . The method of claim 27 , wherein a first visual indicator for the first action is displayed at the user interface before the first action-option menu is presented.
33 . The method of claim 27 , wherein a first second visual indicator for the second action is displayed at the user interface before the second action-option menu is presented.
34 . The computer-implemented method of claim 27 , wherein the user interface further includes one or more other panes in addition to the message-list pane.
35 . The computer-implemented method of claim 34 , wherein the one or more other panes include a message-reading pane that displays a selected message from the message list.
36 . The computer-implemented method of claim 34 , wherein the one or more other panes include a collections pane that presents a list of message collections, the method further comprising:
detecting a user selection of a message collection in the collections pane; and presenting at least some of the messages in the selected collection in the message-list pane.
37 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium including one or more sequences of instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the processors to perform operations comprising:
presenting a user interface including a message-list pane that displays a list of messages including a first message and a second message; receiving a first user input from a user input device that controls a location of an on-screen cursor, wherein the user input indicates a drag operation on the first message in a first direction over a first distance from a starting cursor location to a first current cursor location, and wherein the first distance is associated with a first action to be performed on the first message; presenting, at the user interface, a first action-option menu including a plurality of first options associated with the first action; receiving a second user input from the user input device, wherein the second user input indicates a drag operation on the second message in the first direction at a second distance from the starting cursor location to a second current cursor location, and wherein the second distance is longer than the first distance and associated with a second action to be performed on the second message; and presenting, at the user interface, a second action-option menu including a plurality of second options associated with the second action.
38 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 37 , wherein the operations further comprise:
receiving an additional first user input indicating a first action option from the plurality of first options; and performing the first action option on the first message.
39 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 37 , wherein the operations further comprise:
receiving an additional second user input indicating a second action option from the plurality of second options; and performing the second action option on the second message.
40 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 37 , wherein a first visual indicator for the first action is displayed at the user interface before the first action-option menu is presented.
41 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 37 , wherein a second visual indicator for the second action is displayed at the user interface before the second action-option menu is presented.
42 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 37 , wherein the user interface further includes one or more other panes in addition to the message-list pane.
43 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 37 , wherein the one or more other panes include a message-reading pane that displays a selected message from the message list.
44 . A computer system comprising:
one or more processors; and a non-transitory computer-readable medium including one or more sequences of instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the processors to perform operations comprising:
presenting a user interface including a message-list pane that displays a list of messages including a first message and a second message;
receiving a first user input from a user input device that controls a location of an on-screen cursor, wherein the user input indicates a drag operation on the first message in a first direction over a first distance from a starting cursor location to a first current cursor location, and wherein the first distance is associated with a first action to be performed on the first message;
presenting, at the user interface, a first action-option menu including a plurality of first options associated with the first action;
receiving a second user input from the user input device, wherein the second user input indicates a drag operation on the second message in the first direction at a second distance from the starting cursor location to a second current cursor location, and wherein the second distance is longer than the first distance and associated with a second action to be performed on the second message; and
presenting, at the user interface, a second action-option menu including a plurality of second options associated with the second action.
45 . The computer system of claim 44 , wherein the operations further comprise:
receiving an additional first user input indicating a first action option from the plurality of first options; and performing the first action option on the first message.
46 . The computer system of claim 44 , wherein the operations further comprise:
receiving an additional second user input indicating a second action option from the plurality of second options; and performing the second action option on the second message.
47 . The computer system of claim 44 , wherein a first visual indicator for the first action is displayed at the user interface before the first action-option menu is presented.
48 . The computer system of claim 44 , wherein a second visual indicator for the second action is displayed at the user interface before the second action-option menu is presented.
