Abstract

A method, system and computer readable medium for information handling within an operating system, including providing a record retrieval program; providing an input device within a window or screen of the operating system and configured to enter an execute command which initiates a record retrieval from local and remote information sources using the record retrieval program; using the record retrieval program to enter first information into search fields provided in the record retrieval program; entering the execute command using the input device after the step of entering the first information; searching, using the record retrieval program, the local and remote information sources for second information associated with the first information; and displaying the second information in the record retrieval program, when one of the local and remote information sources includes second information associated with the first information.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

1 . A method for providing information, for display on a client, related to a text displayed by an independently executable computer program running on the client, the method comprising:
causing analyzing of the text in order to identify first information therein having a pre-existing association with second information, without any need for prior human designation of text comprising the first information, wherein the analyzing includes comparing portions of the text to elements in a list that includes at least two distinct textual elements, to determine if at least a part of the text includes at least one of the textual elements in the list, wherein, if at least a part of the text that is subject to the analyzing in order to identify first information includes at least one of the textual elements in the list, then that part of this text is the first information; causing delivery, over the internet, of at least part of the second information, wherein the second information has textual content that depends on textual content of the first information as a consequence of the pre-existing association, so that (a) the textual content of the second information varies at least some of the time according to which of the textual elements from the list is found in the first information, and (b) the second information is identified at least in part based on a search, occurring after the analyzing, using at least part of the first information as a search criterion in a database that is distinct from the list of textual elements; and causing display on the client computer, using the independently executable computer program, of (i) at least a part of the second information and,
contemporaneously, (ii) an input device allowing a user to input an execute command, wherein receipt of an execute command from the input device causes display of further information that is related to the second information and located in a data source accessible over the internet.

2 . A method according to claim 1 , wherein the first information and the second information have the pre-existing association by being stored together in a database.

3 . A method according to claim 2 , wherein the first information is a name and the second information is an address.

4 . A method according to claim 3 , wherein the database is stored in the data source.

5 . A method according to claim 1 , wherein the client computer is selected from the group consisting of a personal computer, a cell phone, a palm top device, and a personal organizer.

6 . A non-transitory computer readable medium encoded with program instructions for providing information, for display on a client, related to a text displayed by an independently executable computer program running on the client, the instructions for performing computer processes comprising:
causing analyzing of the text in order to identify first information therein having a pre-existing association with second information, without any need for prior human designation of text comprising the first information, wherein the analyzing includes comparing portions of the text to elements in a list that includes at least two distinct textual elements, to determine if at least a part of the text includes at least one of the textual elements in the list, wherein, if at least a part of the text that is subject to the analyzing in order to identify first information includes at least one of the textual elements in the list, then that part of this text is the first information; causing delivery, over the internet, of at least part of the second information, wherein the second information has textual content that depends on textual content of the first information as a consequence of the pre-existing association, so that (a) the textual content of the second information varies at least some of the time according to which of the textual elements from the list is found in the first information, and (b) the second information is identified at least in part based on a search, occurring after the analyzing, using at least part of the first information as a search criterion in a database that is distinct from the list of textual elements; and causing display on the client computer, using the independently executable computer program, of (i) at least a part of the second information and,
contemporaneously, (ii) an input device allowing a user to input an execute command, wherein receipt of an execute command from the input device causes display of further information that is related to the second information and located in a data source accessible over the Internet.

7 . A non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 6 , wherein the first information and the second information have the pre-existing association by being stored together in a database.

8 . A non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 7 , wherein the first information is a name and the second information is an address.

9 . A non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 8 , wherein the database is stored in the data source.

10 . A non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 6 , wherein the client computer is selected from the group consisting of a personal computer, a cell phone, a palm top device, and a personal organizer.
