Abstract
An aircraft composed of an airframe, an extending tail, a counter rotating, coaxial main rotor assembly including an upper rotor assembly and a lower rotor assembly, and a translational thrust system positioned at the extending tail. The translational thrust system provides translational thrust to the airframe. The aircraft also includes a rotor hover figure of merit greater than about 0.79 for a C T/σ between about 0.085 and about 0.125.

an airframe; an extending tail; a counter rotating, coaxial main rotor assembly including an upper rotor assembly and a lower rotor assembly; and a translational thrust system positioned at the extending tail, the translational thrust system providing translational thrust to the airframe; wherein the aircraft has a rotor hover figure of merit greater than about 0.79 for a C T /σ between about 0.085 and about 0.125.
2 . The aircraft according to claim 1 , wherein the rotor hover figure of merit is greater than about 0.80 for a C T /σ between about 0.0925 and about 0.125.
3 . The aircraft according to claim 1 , wherein the rotor hover figure of merit is greater than about 0.81 for a C T /σ between about 0.1025 and about 0.125.
4 . The aircraft according to claim 1 , wherein the rotor hover figure of merit is greater than about 0.815 for a C T /σ between about 0.12 and about 0.125.
5 . The aircraft according to claim 1 , wherein the rotor hover figure of merit is about 0.815 for a C T /σ between about 0.12 and about 0.125.
6 . An aircraft comprising:
an airframe; an extending tail; a counter rotating, coaxial main rotor assembly including an upper rotor assembly and a lower rotor assembly; and a translational thrust system positioned at the extending tail, the translational thrust system providing translational thrust to the airframe; wherein the aircraft has a rotor hover figure of merit between about 0.79 and 0.82 for a C T /σ between about 0.085 and about 0.125.
7 . The aircraft according to claim 6 , wherein the rotor hover figure of merit is between about 0.80 and about 0.82 for a C T /σ between about 0.0925 and about 0.125.
8 . The aircraft according to claim 6 , wherein the rotor hover figure of merit is between about 0.81 and about 0.82 for a C T /σ between about 0.1025 and about 0.125.
