Claims

Abstract

A subscriber unit for automatic repeat request mechanisms and related methods are disclosed. The subscriber unit may comprise transmitting a single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) signals using a plurality of hybrid automatic repeat request (ARQ) mechanisms. The plurality of hybrid ARQ mechanisms may use a stop and wait architecture. Further, each of the plurality of hybrid ARQ mechanisms may transmit in a different time interval and each time interval includes at least one time slot. The subscriber unit may receive downlink data signals using hybrid ARQ and may receive acknowledgments (ACKs)/negative acknowledgments, wherein the ACK/NAKs may be received in a time period between the downlink transmissions.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A subscriber unit comprising:
 a receiver;   a transmitter; and   a controller; and   the controller and the transmitter are configured to transmit single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) signals, wherein the SC-FDE signals are transmitted using a plurality of hybrid automatic repeat request (ARQ) mechanisms, wherein the plurality of hybrid ARQ mechanisms use a stop and wait architecture, wherein each of the plurality of hybrid ARQ mechanisms transmit in a different time interval, wherein each time interval includes at least one time slot; and   the controller and the receiver are configured to receive downlink data signals using hybrid ARQ and to receive acknowledgements (ACKs)/negative acknowledgements (NAKs), wherein the ACK/NAKs are transmitted in a time period between the downlink transmissions.   
     
     
         2 . The subscriber unit of  claim 1  wherein data transmitted in one of the SC-FDE signals is turbo coded. 
     
     
         3 . The subscriber unit of  claim 2  wherein a retransmission of the transmitted data uses a different encoding than the original transmission. 
     
     
         4 . The subscriber unit of  claim 1  wherein a modulation and coding varies between SC-FDE signal transmissions. 
     
     
         5 . The subscriber unit of  claim 4  wherein modulation schemes include QPSK, 16-QAM and 64-QAM. 
     
     
         6 . The subscriber unit of  claim 1  wherein SC-FDE resources vary between SC-FDE signal transmissions. 
     
     
         7 . The subscriber unit of  claim 1  wherein an error check sequence is appended to data of a SC-FDE transmission. 
     
     
         8 . The subscriber unit of  claim 1  wherein each hybrid ARQ mechanism is assigned a maximum number of retransmissions. 
     
     
         9 . A method for a subscriber unit comprising:
 transmitting a single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) signals using a plurality of hybrid automatic repeat request (ARQ) mechanisms, wherein the plurality of hybrid ARQ mechanisms use a stop and wait architecture, and wherein each of the plurality of hybrid ARQ mechanisms transmit in a different time interval and each time interval includes at least one time slot;   receiving downlink data signals using hybrid ARQ; and   receiving acknowledgements (ACKs)/negative acknowledgements (NAKs), wherein the ACK/NAKs are received in a time period between the downlink transmissions.   
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein data transmitted in one of the SC-FDE signals is turbo coded. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 10 , wherein a retransmission of the transmitted data uses a different encoding than the original transmission.
