Mattress pad or topper with corner wedge

Abstract

A mattress pad or topper includes a base layer having a peripheral edge and a depending sidewall extending from the peripheral edge. The depending sidewall has one or more first section and one or more second section having different properties or characteristics than the first section. The depending sidewall includes a plurality of sides and a plurality of corners, each corner positioned between two adjacent sides, and the second section extends across each corner and a portion of the two adjacent sides between which each corner is positioned. The first section extends across a portion of each side.

1 . A mattress pad or topper comprising:
 a base layer having a peripheral edge; and   a depending sidewall extending from a fixed end at the peripheral edge to a free end, the depending sidewall having one or more first section and one or more second section, the one or more first section being formed from a material different than a material of the one of more second section, the one or more second section having greater elastic properties than the one or more first section,   wherein the depending sidewall includes a plurality of sides and a plurality of corners, each corner positioned between two adjacent sides,   wherein the one or more second section extends across a corner of the plurality of corners and a portion of the two adjacent sides between which the corner is positioned, the one or more second section also extending from the fixed end to the free end of the depending sidewall,   wherein each of the one or more second section extends to but not onto or over the base layer, and   wherein each of the one or more second section has a truncated generally triangular shape defining a truncated peak, and wherein a long side of a base of the truncated generally triangular shape opposite the truncated peak is fixed to and extends along the peripheral edge of the base layer.

         4 . The mattress pad or topper of  claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more first section extends across a portion of each side. 
     
     
         5 . The mattress pad or topper of  claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more second section is a different color than the first section. 
     
     
         6 . The mattress pad or topper of  claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more section is connected to its respective adjacent first sections such that the first section and the second section are positioned substantially in series about a periphery of the depending sidewall. 
     
     
         7 . The mattress pad or topper of  claim 6 , wherein each of the one or more second section is connected to its respective adjacent first section by stitching, adhesive, a hook and loop fastener, a slide fastener, buttons or snaps. 
     
     
         8 . The mattress pad or topper of  claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more second section is connected to its respective adjacent first section so as to overlap a portion of the first section. 
     
     
         9 . The mattress pad or topper of  claim 8 , wherein each of the one or more second section is connected to its respective adjacent first section by stitching, adhesive, a hook and loop fastener, a slide fastener, buttons or snaps. 
     
     
         10 . The mattress pad or topper of  claim 1 , wherein the depending sidewall further includes an elastic strand for fitting of the depending sidewall to a mattress.

         12 . The mattress pad or topper of  claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more first section and second section are constructed differently to provide the different elastic properties. 
     
     
         13 . The mattress pad or topper of  claim 1 , wherein the base layer includes a gusset extending along the peripheral edge.
