Enhanced content consumption

Abstract

Enhanced content consumption is provided by establishing a pairing between two computing devices, wherein at least one of the two computing devices provides a primary consumption experience of a digital content item, so that a secondary consumption experience can be provided via operation of at least one of the two computing devices. The method further comprises presenting, using at least one of the two computing devices, the digital content item for consumption by a user. The method further comprises performing one or more supplemental consumption functions with the other of the two computing devices.

1 . A method of enhancing consumption of digital video content, comprising:
 providing a primary video content item for display on a primary display device; and   providing a supplemental computing experience time-synchronized to the primary video content item for display on a companion display device, the supplemental computing experience including time-synchronized layered information not present in the primary video content item, the layered information supplementing time-synchronized information present in the primary video content item.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , where the primary display device is a television. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , where the companion display device is a tablet computer. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , where the companion display device is a mobile communication device. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , where the primary video content item is provided to a computing device comprising a media player and the computing device is communicatively coupled with the primary display device. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , where the time-synchronized layered information includes trivia related to the primary video content item. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , where the time-synchronized layered information includes director's cut information. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , where the supplemental computing experience provides a time-synchronized party-chat mode. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 1 , where the primary video content item and the supplemental computing experience are provided via a network. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 1 , where the supplemental computing experience includes one or more input controls controlling presentation of the primary video content item. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 1 , where the supplemental computing experience is based on capabilities of the companion display device. 
     
     
         12 . A computing device, comprising:
 a processor; and   a data holding subsystem holding instructions executable by the processor to:
 provide a primary video content item for display on a primary display device; and 
 provide a supplemental computing experience time-synchronized to the primary video content item for display on a companion display device, the supplemental computing experience including time-synchronized layered information not present in the primary video content item, the layered information supplementing time-synchronized information present in the primary video content item.

         14 . The computing device of  claim 12 , where the companion display device is a tablet computer.

         16 . The computing device of  claim 12 , where the computing device is a media player communicatively coupled with the primary display device and including a communication subsystem configured to receive the primary video content item via the Internet. 
     
     
         17 . The computing device of  claim 12 , where the time-synchronized layered information includes trivia related to the primary video content item. 
     
     
         18 . The computing device of  claim 12 , where the time-synchronized layered information includes director's cut information. 
     
     
         19 . The computing device of  claim 12 , where the supplemental computing experience includes provision of one or more input controls controlling playback of the primary video content item. 
     
     
         20 . A method of enhancing consumption of digital video content, comprising:
 providing a primary video content item to a media player via the Internet for display on a television communicatively coupled with the media player; and   providing a supplemental computing experience time-synchronized to the primary video content item to a mobile computer via the Internet, the supplemental computing experience including time-synchronized layered information not present in the primary video content item, the layered information supplementing time-synchronized information present in the primary video content item.
