Abstract
Methods for controlling weeds in a crop, comprising applying to the weeds a herbicidally effective amount of a composition comprising a p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor are presented.

8 . A method for controlling weeds in cultivated rice, comprising applying to said weeds a herbicidally effective amount of a composition comprising a p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor; wherein said weeds comprise one or more selected from the group consisting of broadleaf signalgrass, barnyardgrass, large crabgrass, hemp sesbania , yellow nutsedge, and benghal dayflower; wherein the HPPD inhibitor is selected from the group consisting of mesotrione, sulcotrione, nitisinone, tembotrione, topramezone, fenquinotrione, ketospiradox and tefuryltrione, and wherein said application of HPPD inhibitor is safe for use on the cultivated rice.
9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the HPPD inhibitor comprises mesotrione.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein said mesotrione is applied at a rate of from 3 to 100 g ai/ha.
11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein said mesotrione is applied at a rate of 3, 6, 12, 12.5, 25, 37.5, 50, 62.5, 75, 87.5, or 100 g ai/ha.
12 . The method of claim 8 , wherein said weeds comprise one or more selected from the group consisting of broadleaf signalgrass, large crabgrass, hemp sesbania , yellow nutsedge, and benghal dayflower.
13 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the composition further comprises an additional crop protection agent.
14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the additional crop protection agent comprises an insecticide, fungicide, herbicide or plant growth regulator.

The method of claim 14 wherein the additional crop protection agent comprises an insecticide comprising a carbamate, organophosphate, cyclodiene organochlorine compound, fiprole, neonicotinoid, spinosyn, chloride channel activator, juvenile hormone mimic, selective homopteran feeding blocker, mite growth inhibitor, inhibitor of mitochondrial ATP synthase, uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation nicotinic acetylcholine receptor channel blocker, inhibitor of the chitin biosynthesis type 0, inhibitors of the chitin biosynthesis type 1, molting disruptor, ecdyson receptor agonist, mitochondrial complex electron transport inhibitor, voltage-dependent sodium channel blocker, inhibitor of lipid synthesis, ryanodine receptor-modulator, or sodium channel modulator.

The method of claim 14 wherein the additional crop protection agent comprises a herbicide from the acetyl-CoA carboxylase inhibitor (ACC), acetolactate synthase inhibitor (ALS), amide, auxin, auxin transport inhibitor, carotenoid biosynthesis inhibitor, enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase inhibitors (EPSPS), glutamine synthetase inhibitor, glutamine synthetase inhibitor, lipid biosynthesis inhibitor, mitosis inhibitor, protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase inhibitor, photosynthesis inhibitor, synergist, CIS cell wall synthesis inhibitor, dichloropropionic acid, dihydrobenzofuran, or phenylacetic acid class.
