Abstract

The disclosure includes a method for providing prosthetic implants for a total knee replacement procedure. This method includes receiving data representative of a knee joint of a patient and determining anatomical parameters from the received data. The method also includes creating a graphical model of the knee joint based on the determined anatomical parameters, and providing a femoral component of a knee joint implant based on at least one of the determined anatomical parameters and the graphical femoral portion. This method also includes providing at least one cutting instrument configured to facilitate removing a portion of the femur of the patient based on at least one of determined anatomical parameters and the graphical model.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method for providing prosthetic implants for a total knee replacement procedure, the method comprising:
 receiving data representative of a knee joint of a patient;   determining anatomical parameters of the knee joint from the received data;   creating a graphical model of the knee joint based on the determined anatomical parameters, wherein the graphical model of the knee joint includes a graphical femoral portion and a graphical tibial portion, the graphical femoral portion including:
 a graphical medial condyle having a radius and a width; 
 a graphical lateral condyle having a radius and a width; and 
 a graphical trochlear groove having a width; 
   determining an angular relationship between the graphical medial condyle, the graphical lateral condyle, and a central longitudinal axis of a femur of the patient;   providing a femoral component of a knee joint implant based on at least one of: i) the determined anatomical parameters; and ii) the graphical femoral portion, the femoral component of the knee joint implant including:
 a medial condyle portion having a width and a radius; 
 a lateral condyle portion having a width and a radius; and 
 a trochlear groove having a width and an angle, 
 wherein the width of the medial condyle portion is different from the width of the lateral condyle portion, and 
 wherein the radius of the medial condyle portion is different from the radius of the lateral condyle portion; 
   providing a tibial component of the knee joint implant based on at least one of: i) the determined anatomical parameters; and ii) the model of the tibial portion of the knee joint, the tibial component comprising a platform and a tibial fixation component, the tibial fixation component configured to be positioned in a tibia of the patient;   providing at least one first cutting instrument configured to facilitate removing a portion of the femur of the patient based on at least one of: i) the determined anatomical parameters; and ii) the graphical model;   providing at least one second cutting instrument configured to facilitate removing a portion of a tibia of the patient based on at least one of: i) the determined anatomical parameters; and ii) the graphical model;   providing a tibial insert of the knee joint implant, the tibial insert configured to be positioned against the platform of the tibial component, wherein a bearing surface of the femoral component is configured to contact the tibial insert; and   providing a patella component of the knee joint implant.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising preparing the femur of the knee joint of the patient by cutting medial and lateral condyles of the femur using the first cutting instrument. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the first cutting instrument enables a user to make one or more bone cuts in a particular pattern in the femur of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the second cutting instrument enables a user to make one or more bone cuts in a particular pattern in the tibia of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the femoral component of the knee joint implant, the tibial component of the knee joint implant, and the patella component of the knee joint implant are configured to be implanted with bone cement. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the patella component is configured to correspond to the femoral component. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the femoral component is configured and dimensioned to replace at least portions of lateral and medial condyles of the femur of the patient. 
     
     
         8 . A method for providing prosthetic implants for a total knee replacement procedure, the method comprising:
 receiving data representative of a knee joint of a patient;   determining anatomical parameters of the knee joint from the received data;   creating a graphical model of the knee joint based on the determined anatomical parameters, wherein the graphical model of the knee joint includes a graphical femoral portion and a graphical tibial portion, the graphical femoral portion including:
 a graphical medial condyle having a radius and a width; 
 a graphical lateral condyle having a radius and a width; and 
 a graphical trochlear groove having a width; 
   providing a femoral component of a knee joint implant based on at least one of: i) the determined anatomical parameters; and ii) the graphical femoral portion, the femoral component of the knee joint implant including:
 a medial condyle portion having a width and a radius; 
 a lateral condyle portion having a width and a radius; and 
 a trochlear groove having a width and an angle, 
 wherein the width of the medial condyle portion is different from the width of the lateral condyle portion, and 
 wherein the radius of the medial condyle portion is different from the radius of the lateral condyle portion; and 
   providing at least one first cutting instrument configured to facilitate removing a portion of the femur of the patient based on at least one of: i) the determined anatomical parameters; and ii) the graphical model.   
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 8 , further comprising:
 providing a tibial component of the knee joint implant based on at least one of: i) the determined anatomical parameters; and ii) the model of the tibial portion of the knee joint, the tibial component comprising a platform and a tibial fixation component, the tibial fixation component configured to be positioned in a tibia of the patient; and   providing at least one second cutting instrument configured to facilitate removing a portion of a tibia of the patient based on at least one of: i) the determined anatomical parameters; and ii) the graphical model.   
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 8 , further comprising providing a tibial insert, the tibial insert configured to be positioned against the platform of the tibial component, wherein a bearing surface of the femoral component is configured to contact the tibial insert. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 8 , further comprising providing a patella component of the knee joint implant. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 8 , further comprising preparing the femur of the knee joint of the patient by cutting medial and lateral condyles of the femur using the corresponding cutting instruments for the femoral component of the knee joint implant. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 8  wherein the first cutting instrument enables a user to make one or more bone cuts in a particular pattern in the femur of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein the second cutting instrument enables a user to make one or more bone cuts in a particular pattern in the tibia of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the femoral component implant, the tibial component implant, and the patella component implant are configured to be implanted with bone cement. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the patella component is configured to correspond to the femoral component. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein the femoral component is configured and dimensioned to replace at least a portion of lateral and medial condyles of the femur of the patient. 
     
     
         18 . A system of prosthetic implants for a total knee replacement procedure, the system comprising:
 a graphical model of the knee joint includes a graphical femoral portion and a graphical tibial portion, the graphical femoral portion including:
 a graphical medial condyle having a radius and a width; 
 a graphical lateral condyle having a radius and a width; and 
 a graphical trochlear groove having a width; 
   a femoral component of a knee joint implant based on the graphical femoral portion, the femoral component of the knee joint implant including:
 a medial condyle portion having a width and a radius; 
 a lateral condyle portion having a width and a radius; and 
 a trochlear groove having a width and an angle, 
 wherein the width of the medial condyle portion is different from the width of the lateral condyle portion, and 
 wherein the radius of the medial condyle portion is different from the radius of the lateral condyle portion; 
   corresponding cutting instruments for the femoral component of the knee joint implant based on the graphical model of the femoral portion of the knee joint;   a tibial component of the knee joint implant based on the model of the tibial portion of the knee joint, the tibial component comprising a platform and a tibial fixation component, the tibial fixation component configured to be positioned in a tibia of the patient;   at least one first cutting instrument configured to facilitate removing a portion of the femur of the patient based on the graphical model;   at least one second cutting instrument configured to facilitate removing a portion of a tibia of the patient based on the graphical model;   a tibial insert of the knee joint implant, the tibial insert configured to be positioned against the platform of the tibial component, wherein a bearing surface of the femoral component is configured to contact the tibial insert; and   a patella component of the knee joint implant.   
     
     
         19 . The system of  claim 18 , wherein the at least one first cutting instrument enables a user to make one or more bone cuts in a particular pattern in the femur of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         20 . The system of  claim 18 , wherein the at least one second cutting instrument enables a user to make one or more bone cuts in a particular pattern in the tibia of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         21 . The system of  claim 18 , wherein the femoral component implant, the tibial component implant, and the patella component implant are configured to be implanted with bone cement. 
     
     
         22 . The system of  claim 18 , wherein the patella component is configured to correspond to the femoral component. 
     
     
         23 . The system of  claim 18 , wherein the femoral component is configured and dimensioned to replace at least portions of lateral and medial condyles of the femur of the patient.
