Orthopedic implant rod reduction tool set and method
Abstract
A tool set for implanting a rod in a human spine in conjunction with bone screws. The tool set includes a pair of end guide tools that receive opposite ends of the rod in channels and under manipulation by a surgeon facilitate transport of the rod toward the bone screws attached to the guide tools. Intermediate guide tools having guiding pass through slots are utilized to guide intermediate locations along the rod toward associated bone screws. An attachment structure operably connects the guide tools to the bone screws. The guide tools each include a lower guide and advancement structure to allow a closure tope with mating structure to be rotated and driven downward against the rod and to cooperate with similar structure in the bone screw to seat and lock the rod therein. A method utilizing the tool set allows a surgeon to percutaneously implant the rod in the patient.

1 . A head of a bone anchor, the head configured to receive a rod that is locked in the head via a closure top, the head comprising:
a first upstanding arm and a second upstanding arm spaced apart from the first upstanding arm by a rod receiving channel located between the first and second upstanding arms; and a slot that extends along a periphery of the first upstanding arm, the slot being located above the rod when the rod is locked in the rod receiving channel by the closure top.
2 . The head of claim 1 , wherein the slot extends circumferentially along the periphery of the first upstanding arm.
3 . The head of claim 1 , wherein the slot is located entirely above the rod when the rod is locked in the rod receiving channel by the closure top.
4 . The head of claim 1 , wherein the slot extends horizontal along the periphery of the first upstanding arm.
5 . The head of claim 1 , wherein the slot extends towards the rod receiving channel.
6 . The head of claim 5 , wherein the slot intersects the rod receiving channel.
7 . A bone anchor comprising the head of claim 1 and further comprising a bone anchoring member extending downward from the head or configured to extend downward from the head.
8 . The bone anchor of claim 7 , wherein the bone anchor is a bone screw, and the bone anchoring member includes a helically threaded shank.
9 . The bone anchor of claim 7 , wherein the head is rotatable relative to the bone anchoring member.
10 . A system comprising the bone anchor of claim 7 and further comprising a tool comprising an attachment structure that is received in the slot when the tool couples with the head of the bone anchor.
11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the attachment structure and the slot combine to form a snap-on type assembly.
12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the tool includes an elongated body comprising a longitudinal opening that extends upwardly from a bottom of the elongated body, the opening aligning with the rod receiving channel of the head when the tool attachment structure is received in the slot when the tool couples with the head of the bone anchor.
13 . The system of claim 10 , further comprising at least one of the rod or the closure top.
14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the closure top threadably engages a threaded advancement structure defined on opposed portions of the first and second upstanding arms.
15 . A head of a bone anchor, the head configured to receive a rod that is locked in the head via a closure top, the head comprising:
a top end, a bottom end opposite the top end, and an outer side extending between the top end and bottom end; a rod receiving channel extending downward from the top end, the rod receiving channel opening in a first region of the outer side and in a second region of the outer side opposite the first region; and a slot defined in the outer side and extending along the outer side from the first region, the slot being located above the rod when the rod is locked in the rod receiving channel by the closure top.
16 . The head of claim 15 , further comprising a first upstanding arm extending to the top end, a second upstanding arm extending to the top end and spaced apart from the first upstanding arm by the rod receiving channel located between the first and second upstanding arms, wherein the slot extends along the first upstanding arm in extending along the outer side from the first region.
17 . The head of claim 15 , wherein the slot extends circumferentially along the outer side.
18 . The head of claim 15 , wherein the slot is located entirely above the rod when the rod is locked in the rod receiving channel by the closure top.
19 . The head of claim 15 , wherein the slot extends horizontal along the outer side.
20 . The head of claim 15 , wherein the slot intersects the rod receiving channel.
21 . A bone anchor comprising the head of claim 15 and further comprising a bone anchoring member extending downward from the head.
22 . The bone anchor of claim 21 , wherein the bone anchor is a bone screw, and the bone anchoring member includes a helically threaded shank.
23 . The bone anchor of claim 21 , wherein the head is rotatable relative to the bone anchoring member.
24 . A system comprising the bone anchor of claim 21 and further comprising a tool comprising an attachment structure that is received in the slot when the tool couples with the head of the bone anchor.
25 . The system of claim 24 , wherein the attachment structure and the slot combine to form a snap-on type assembly.
26 . The system of claim 24 , wherein the tool includes an elongated body comprising a longitudinal opening that extends upwardly from a bottom of the elongated body, the opening aligning with the rod receiving channel of the head when the tool attachment structure is received in the slot when the tool couples with the head of the bone anchor.
27 . The system of claim 24 , further comprising at least one of the rod or the closure top.
28 . The system of claim 27 , wherein the closure top threadably engages a threaded advancement structure defined on opposed portions of the first and second upstanding arms.
29 . A head of a bone anchor, the head configured to receive a rod that is locked in the head via a closure top, the head comprising:
a top end, a bottom end opposite the top end, a longitudinal center axis extending between the top end and bottom end, and a side extending between the top end and bottom end, the side off set from, and extending about, the longitudinal center axis, the side facing away from the longitudinal center axis; a rod receiving channel extending downward from the top end, the rod receiving channel opening in a first region of the side and in a second region of the side opposite the first region; and an elongated recess defined in an outer surface of the side and horizontally extending along the side from the first region, the elongated recess opening radially outward and located entirely above the rod when the rod is locked in the rod receiving channel by the closure top.
30 . The head of claim 29 , wherein the elongated recess extends circumferentially along the outer surface of the side.
31 . The head of claim 29 , wherein the elongated recess intersects the rod receiving channel.
32 . A bone anchor comprising the head of claim 29 and further comprising a bone anchoring member extending downward from the head.
33 . The bone anchor of claim 32 , wherein the bone anchor is a bone screw, and the bone anchoring member includes a helically threaded shank.
34 . The bone anchor of claim 32 , wherein the head is rotatable relative to the bone anchoring member.
35 . A system comprising the bone anchor of claim 32 and further comprising a tool comprising an attachment structure that is received in the elongated recess when the tool couples with the head of the bone anchor.

The system of claim 35 , wherein the tool includes an elongated body comprising a longitudinal opening that extends upwardly from a bottom of the elongated body, the opening aligning with the rod receiving channel of the head when the tool attachment structure is received in the elongated recess when the tool couples with the head of the bone anchor.
37 . The system of claim 35 , further comprising at least one of the rod or the closure top.
