Link retrofitting of digital media objects
Abstract
A digital media link embedding mechanism for generating one or more links for digital media objects embedded in network resources, such as HyperText Markup Language (HTML) or extensible markup language (XML) pages. Particular implementations of the invention allow network application hosting sites, such as blogging sites and social networking or media sites, to automatically insert revenue generating and/or informational links in proximity to digital media objects embedded by users into personal pages, blog entries, on-line forum posts, and the like. In one implementation, analysis to generate the media links focuses on data surrounding a given digitial content object to improve the relevance, or descriptiveness, of the links. Such media-related ad or search links may be more performant (relative to clickthru rates), since the concepts or keywords used to generate the ad and or search are extracted from data surrounding the digital content.

23 . A method comprising:
identifying, by a computing device, a digital media object in a blog page associated with a user, the digital media object previously embedded in the blog page by the user, the digital media object comprising one or more of an image, a video clip, and an audio clip; identifying, by the computing device, data surrounding the digital media object on the blog page, the data surrounding the digital media object comprising data around the digital media object and next to the digital media object; extracting, by the computing device, one or more terms from the data; determining, by the computing device, an advertisement link to an advertisement, the advertisement based on the extracted terms; and inserting, by the computing device, the advertisement link into the blog page adjacent to the digital media object without affecting the digital media object.
24 . The method of claim 23 , further comprising analyzing, by the computing device, meta tags associated with the digital media object.
25 . The method of claim 23 , further comprising identifying a content embedding entity identifier based on an identity of the user.
26 . The method of claim 25 , further comprising incorporating the content embedding entity identifier into the advertisement link.
27 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising determining, by the computing device, whether to construct the advertisement link based on formatting parameters associated with the digital media object.
28 . The method of claim 27 , further comprising, when the formatting parameters associated with the digital media object are above a predetermined threshold, constructing the advertisement link.
29 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the content embedding entity identifier enables a determination of benefits to be shared by entities.
30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the benefits comprise one or more of monetary benefits or points in an account that may be redeemed for awards.
31 . The method of claim 23 , further comprising generating a first hyperlink based on the extracted terms, the first hyperlink for insertion into the blog page.
32 . The method of claim 31 , wherein the first hyperlink, when activated, causes the computing device to access a search system using the one or more extracted terms.
33 . A computing device comprising:
a processor; a storage medium for tangibly storing thereon program logic for execution by the processor, the program logic comprising: digital media object identifying logic executed by the processor for identifying a digital media object in a blog page associated with a user, the digital media object previously embedded in the blog page by the user, the digital media object comprising one or more of an image, a video clip, and an audio clip; data identifying logic executed by the processor for identifying data surrounding the digital media object on the blog page, the data surrounding the digital media object comprising data around the digital media object and next to the digital media object; extracting logic executed by the processor for extracting one or more terms from the data; advertisement link determining logic executed by the processor for determining an advertisement link to an advertisement, the advertisement based on the extracted terms; and inserting logic executed by the processor for inserting the advertisement link into the blog page adjacent to the digital media object without affecting the digital media object.
34 . The computing device of claim 33 , further comprising analyzing logic executed by the processor for analyzing meta tags associated with the digital media object.
35 . The computing device of claim 33 , further comprising content embedding entity identifier logic executed by the processor for identifying a content embedding entity identifier based on an identity of the user.
36 . The computing device of claim 35 , further comprising link incorporating logic executed by the processor for incorporating the content embedding entity identifier into the advertisement link.
37 . The computing device of claim 36 , further comprising hyperlink determining logic executed by the processor for determining whether to construct the advertisement link based on formatting parameters associated with the digital media object.
38 . The computing device of claim 37 , further comprising advertisement link constructing logic executed by the processor for, when the formatting parameters associated with the digital media object are above a predetermined threshold, constructing the advertisement link.
39 . The computing device of claim 36 , further comprising benefits determination logic executed by the processor for determining, based on the content embedding entity identifier, benefits to be shared by entities.
40 . The computing device of claim 33 , further comprising first hyperlink generating logic executed by the processor for generating a first hyperlink based on the extracted terms, the first hyperlink for insertion into the blog page.
41 . The computing device of claim 41 , wherein the first hyperlink, when activated, causes the computing device to access a search system using the one or more extracted terms.
42 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising computer instructions that, when executed by a processor, performs the steps of:
identifying, by the processor, a digital media object in a blog page associated with a user, the digital media object previously embedded in the blog page by the user, the digital media object comprising one or more of an image, a video clip, and an audio clip; identifying, by the processor, data surrounding the digital media object on the blog page, the data surrounding the digital media object comprising data around the digital media object and next to the digital media object; extracting, by the processor, one or more terms from the data; determining, by the processor, an advertisement link to an advertisement, the advertisement based on the extracted terms; and inserting, by the processor, the advertisement link into the blog page adjacent to the digital media object without affecting the digital media object.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
