Claims
Abstract
A system and method are disclosed that determines the location of an object touching a display screen. The system and method modifies already existing display technology, including using the underlying structure of many types of existing displays as the touch detecting structure. The systems and methods are applicable to virtually all LCD and LCD-like displays, including emissive displays (OLED, PLED, quantum dot displays, etc.), electronic paper, and others.

14 . A touch screen comprising:
a. a group of display pixels, each display pixel including display circuitry that includes a circuit element; and b. touch sensing circuitry in one or more of the display pixels including:
a conductive portion that includes one of the circuit elements wherein the conductive portion is a common electrode,
first and second conductive lines, each of the first and the second conductive lines extending from the display pixel to an outer edge of the group of display pixels,
a first switch that connects and disconnects the first conductive line to the conductive portion, and
a second switch that connects and disconnects the second conductive line to the conductive portion.
15 . The touch screen of claim 14 , wherein the circuit elements include common electrodes.
16 . The touch screen of claim 14 , wherein each of the first conductive lines is electrically connected to a plurality of first switches.
17 . The touch screen of claim 14 , wherein the second conductive lines include data lines of the display circuitry.
18 . The touch screen of claim 14 , wherein the first switch is a thin film transistor.
19 . The touch screen of claim 14 , wherein the conductive portion includes the circuit element of a first display pixel electrically connected by a bridge to the circuit element of a second display pixel.
20 . The touch screen of claim 19 , wherein the first and second display pixels are adjacent to each other.
