Abstract

A method of conserving power of a mobile device is provided. The method includes monitoring battery capacity of a mobile phone battery, switching off a radio of the mobile device when a battery capacity is below a predetermined threshold, and disabling at least one application, while allowing an application associated with a cellular call to continue enabled.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . (canceled)

         2 . A method of operating a mobile device comprising:
 connecting a mobile device to a WIFI network and a cellular network; initiating a first connection over the WIFI network and a second connection over the cellular network, wherein initiating the first connection is in response to a request from an application, wherein initiating the second connection is in response to the request from the application, wherein the initiation of the second connection is independent of a state of the first connection; displaying an indication of availability of the WIFI network and the cellular network; accessing data through the first connection in response to the request from the application; detecting a condition indicative of time responsiveness of the first connection; accessing data in response to the request from the application through the second connection based on the detected condition.

         3 . A method of provisioning communication services in a network system, comprising:
 managing a state of each of a plurality of radio access networks; maintaining an indication of available services of each of the plurality of radio access networks; connecting to a primary radio access network of the plurality of radio access networks in an active state with a mobile device; registering the mobile device with a secondary radio access network of the plurality of radio access networks in a non-active state, wherein the network system is adapted to perform handover from the primary radio access network to the secondary radio access network based on registration of the mobile device with the secondary radio access network, wherein the primary radio access network comprises a wireless local area network and the secondary radio access network comprises a cellular network; and activating a packet data protocol with the secondary radio access network.

         4 . A mobile device comprising:
 a memory and a processor; and a network interface operable to:
 connect to a WIFI network and a cellular network;
 initiate a first connection over the WIFI network and a second connection over the cellular network,
 wherein the first connection is initiated in response to a request from an application,
 wherein the second connection is initiated in response to the request from the application,
 wherein the second connection is initiated independent of a state of the first connection;
 display an indication of availability of the WIFI network and the cellular network;
 access data through the first connection in response to the a request from the application;
 detect a condition indicative of time responsiveness of the first connection;
 access data in response to the request from the application through the second connection based on the detected condition.

         5 . A mobile device comprising:
 a network interface operable to:
 connect to a plurality of access networks; and
   a processor and memory associated with the network interface and operable to:
 manage a state of each of a plurality of radio access networks;
 maintain an indication of available services of each of the plurality of radio access networks;
 connect to a primary radio access network of the plurality of radio access networks in an active state with a mobile device;
 register the mobile device with a secondary radio access network of the plurality of radio access networks in a non-active state, wherein handover is performed from the primary radio access network to the secondary radio access network based on registration of the mobile device with the secondary radio access network, wherein the primary radio access network comprises a wireless local area network and the secondary radio access network comprises a cellular network; and
 activate a packet data protocol with the secondary radio access network.

         6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the first connection and the second connection are TCP connections.

         7 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the time responsiveness is measured on an application-by-application basis for other applications executing on the mobile device.

         8 . The method of claim 2 , wherein a time responsiveness of the first connection is measured for each request from the application.

         9 . The mobile device of claim 4 , wherein the first connection and the second connection are TCP connections.

         10 . The mobile device of claim 4 , wherein the time responsiveness is measured on an application-by-application basis for other applications executing on the mobile device.

         11 . The mobile device of claim 4 , wherein a time responsiveness of the first connection is measured for each request from the application.
