Abstract

In one embodiment, a method includes receiving a notification configured to be displayed on a screen of the mobile device, determining whether the mobile device is online to receive the notification, when it is determined that the mobile device is online, sending the notification to be displayed on the screen of the mobile device based on one or more types of events predetermined by the first user, and when it is determined that the mobile device is offline, saving the notification in a notification queue for a predetermined amount of time until it is determined that the mobile device is online.

Claims

What is claimed is:

         1 . A computer-implemented method comprising:
 receiving a notification configured to be displayed on a screen of the mobile device associated with a first user automatically and without any user input to the mobile device; determining whether the mobile device is online to receive the notification; when it is determined that the mobile device is online, sending the notification to be displayed on the screen of the mobile device based on one or more types of events predetermined by the first user; and when it is determined that the mobile device is offline, saving the notification in a notification queue for a predetermined amount of time until it is determined that the mobile device is online.

         2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising, when it is determined that the mobile device in online after the predetermined amount of time after the determination that the mobile device is offline:
 determining whether the notification is relevant or of interest to the first user when the mobile device is online after the predetermined amount of time; when it is determined that the notification is relevant or of interest to the first user, sending the notification to be displayed on the screen of the mobile device; and when it is determined that the notification is no longer relevant or of interest to the first user, discarding the notification.

         3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the determination of whether the notification is relevant or of interest to the first user comprises determining whether the notification includes information about an event taken by or concerning a second user that has occurred recently and is not related to the first user's interaction with the mobile device.

         4 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein:
 wherein the first user is represented by a first node in a social graph of a social-networking system, the social graph comprising a plurality of nodes and edges connecting the nodes, and wherein the types of events predetermined by the first user comprises notifications selected based on a relationship represented by a connection between the first user and the second user corresponding to a second node in the social graph of the social-networking system.

         5 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein:
 the first user and the second user are both members of a social-networking system; the first user and the second user are friends within the social-networking system; and the event taken by or concerning the second user is associated with the social-networking system.

         6 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the notification comprises:
 an icon indicating a type of the action; a name of the second user; and a description of the action.

         7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving the notification from a server associated with a social-networking system.

         8 . One or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media embodying software that is operable when executed to:
 receive a notification configured to be displayed on a screen of the mobile device associated with a first user automatically and without any user input to the mobile device; determine whether the mobile device is online to receive the notification; when it is determined that the mobile device is online, send the notification to be displayed on the screen of the mobile device based on one or more types of events predetermined by the first user; and when it is determined that the mobile device is offline, save the notification in a notification queue for a predetermined amount of time until it is determined that the mobile device is online.

         9 . The media of claim 8 , further operable when execute to, when it is determined that the mobile device in online after the predetermined amount of time after the determination that the mobile device is offline:
 determine whether the notification is relevant or of interest to the first user when the mobile device is online after the predetermined amount of time; when it is determined that the notification is relevant or of interest to the first user, send the notification to be displayed on the screen of the mobile device; and when it is determined that the notification is no longer relevant or of interest to the first user, discard the notification.

         10 . The media of claim 9 , wherein the determination of whether the notification is relevant or of interest to the first user comprises determining whether the notification includes information about an event taken by or concerning a second user that has occurred recently and is not related to the first user's interaction with the mobile device.

         11 . The media of  claim 10 , wherein:
 wherein the first user is represented by a first node in a social graph of a social-networking system, the social graph comprising a plurality of nodes and edges connecting the nodes, and wherein the types of events predetermined by the first user comprises notifications selected based on a relationship represented by a connection between the first user and the second user corresponding to a second node in the social graph of the social-networking system.

         12 . The media of  claim 10 , wherein:
 the first user and the second user are both members of a social-networking system; the first user and the second user are friends within the social-networking system; and the event taken by or concerning the second user is associated with the social-networking system.

         13 . The media of claim 10 , wherein the notification comprises:
 an icon indicating a type of the action; a name of the second user; and a description of the action.

         14 . The media of claim 8 , further comprising receiving the notification from a server associated with a social-networking system.

         15 . A system comprising:
 one or more processors; and a memory coupled to the processors comprising instructions executable by the processors, the processors operable when executing the instructions to:
 receive a notification configured to be displayed on a screen of the mobile device associated with a first user automatically and without any user input to the mobile device;
 determine whether the mobile device is online to receive the notification;
 when it is determined that the mobile device is online, send the notification to be displayed on the screen of the mobile device based on one or more types of events predetermined by the first user; and
 when it is determined that the mobile device is offline, save the notification in a notification queue for a predetermined amount of time until it is determined that the mobile device is online.

         16 . The system of claim 15 , the processors further operable when the instructions to, when it is determined that the mobile device in online after the predetermined amount of time after the determination that the mobile device is offline:
 determine whether the notification is relevant or of interest to the first user when the mobile device is online after the predetermined amount of time; when it is determined that the notification is relevant or of interest to the first user, send the notification to be displayed on the screen of the mobile device; and when it is determined that the notification is no longer relevant or of interest to the first user, discard the notification.

         17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the determination of whether the notification is relevant or of interest to the first user comprises determining whether the notification includes information about an event taken by or concerning a second user that has occurred recently and is not related to the first user's interaction with the mobile device.

         18 . The system of  claim 17 , wherein:
 wherein the first user is represented by a first node in a social graph of a social-networking system, the social graph comprising a plurality of nodes and edges connecting the nodes, and wherein the types of events predetermined by the first user comprises notifications selected based on a relationship represented by a connection between the first user and the second user corresponding to a second node in the social graph of the social-networking system.
