A method of treating a disease or condition selected from constipation and post-operative bowel function related to opioid treatment comprising the step of administering a compound of formula: 
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
       
       wherein Y is a counterion, to a subject in need thereof. 
     
     
         2 . A method of treating a non-central nervous system mediated side effects of opiates comprising the step of administering a compound of formula: 
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         wherein Y is a counterion, to a patient in need thereof. 
       
     
     
         3 . The method according to  claim 2  wherein said non-central nervous system mediated side effect is inhibition of gastrointestinal motility.
