Abstract
Tag data is created from in-band data in a media content item by a remote location while the media content item is being broadcasted by a content provider and received by the remote location. The tag data identifies locations in the media content item which enables media devices to accurately jump to particular locations in the media content item based on the tag data.
Claims

1 . A method, comprising:
receiving, at a media device, a plurality of time-based metadata associated with a reference version of a media content item, the plurality of time-based metadata created by a service provider while the media content item was originally broadcast by a content provider, the plurality of time-based metadata including a first hash value data sequence of in-band data in the media content item indicating a first position in the media content item and a second hash value data sequence of in-band data in the media content item indicating a second position in the media content item; storing, on a storage device at the media device, a received version of the media content item; in response to a first user input, causing display of the stored media content item; while causing the display of the stored media content item, calculating hash value sequences of in-band data in the stored media content item; determining that a first calculated hash value sequence is similar to the first hash value sequence; in response to a second user input:
determining that a second calculated hash value sequence is similar to the second hash value sequence;
causing the display of the stored media content item to not display a portion of the stored media content item between a first location in the stored media content item associated with the first calculated hash value sequence and a second location in the stored media content item associated with the second calculated hash value sequence.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the received version of the media content item comprises a broadcast version recorded locally at the media device.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the received version of the media content item comprises a transcoded version distributed to the media device.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the received version of the media content item comprises a duplicative content segment having a duplicative segment position different from the first position in the media content item, the duplicative content segment associated with a duplicative hash value sequence of in-band data in the media content indicating the duplicative segment position, the method further comprising:
determining a third calculated hash value data sequence is similar to the first hash value data sequence; in response to the second user input: causing display of the stored media content item to display the duplicative content segment at a third location in the stored media content item associated with the third calculated hash value sequence.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the received version of the media content item comprises a cloud DVR version distributed to the media device.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein causing display of the stored media content item to not display the portion of the stored media content item between the first location and the second location in the stored media content item further comprises:
calculating an offset associated with the second location, the offset comprising a current time associated with the received version of the media content item at the media device added to a difference between a time associated with the second location and a current stream time associated with the media content item, the current stream time based on the first position in the media content item.
7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the second user input comprises a selection of a timeline user interface, the selection indicating the second location, the method further comprising:
determining the offset based on the selection; and causing display of the stored media content item to not display the portion of the stored media content item between the first location and the second location in the stored media content item using the offset based on the selection.
8 . One or more non-transitory computer readable storage media storing instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause:
receiving, at a media device, a plurality of time-based metadata associated with a reference version of a media content item, the plurality of time-based metadata created by a service provider while the media content item was originally broadcast by a content provider, the plurality of time-based metadata including a first hash value data sequence of in-band data in the media content item indicating a first position in the media content item and a second hash value data sequence of in-band data in the media content item indicating a second position in the media content item; storing, on a storage device at the media device, a received version of the media content item; in response to a first user input, causing display of the stored media content item; while causing the display of the stored media content item, calculating hash value sequences of in-band data in the stored media content item; determining that a first calculated hash value sequence is similar to the first hash value sequence; in response to a second user input:
determining that a second calculated hash value sequence is similar to the second hash value sequence;
causing the display of the stored media content item to not display a portion of the stored media content item between a first location in the stored media content item associated with the first calculated hash value sequence and a second location in the stored media content item associated with the second calculated hash value sequence.
9 . The one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 8 , wherein the received version of the media content item comprises a broadcast version recorded locally at the media device.
10 . The one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 8 , wherein the received version of the media content item comprises a transcoded version distributed to the media device.

The one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 8 , wherein the received version of the media content item comprises a duplicative content segment having a duplicative segment position different from the first position in the media content item, the duplicative content segment associated with a duplicative hash value sequence of in-band data in the media content indicating the duplicative segment position, the one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media which, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause:
determining a third calculated hash value data sequence is similar to the first hash value data sequence; in response to the second user input: causing display of the stored media content item to display the duplicative content segment at a third location in the stored media content item associated with the third calculated hash value sequence.
12 . The one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 8 , wherein the received version of the media content item comprises a cloud DVR version distributed to the media device.

The one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 8 , wherein causing display of the stored media content item to not display the portion of the stored media content item between the first location and the second location in the stored media content item further comprises:
calculating an offset associated with the second location, the offset comprising a current time associated with the received version of the media content item at the media device added to a difference between a time associated with the second location and a current stream time associated with the media content item, the current stream time based on the first position in the media content item.
14 . The one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 13 , wherein the second user input comprises a selection of a timeline user interface, the selection indicating the second location, the one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media which, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause:
determining the offset based on the selection; and causing display of the stored media content item to not display the portion of the stored media content item between the first location and the second location in the stored media content item using the offset based on the selection.
15 . A media device, comprising:
one or more processors; a storage device; one or more computer-readable storage media storing instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the media device to:
receive a plurality of time-based metadata associated with a reference version of a media content item, the plurality of time-based metadata created by a service provider while the media content item was originally broadcast by a content provider, the plurality of time-based metadata including a first hash value data sequence of in-band data in the media content item indicating a first position in the media content item and a second hash value data sequence of in-band data in the media content item indicating a second position in the media content item;
store, on the storage device at the media device, a received version of the media content item;
in response to a first user input, cause display of the stored media content item;
while causing the display of the stored media content item, calculate hash value sequences of in-band data in the stored media content item;
determine that a first calculated hash value sequence is similar to the first hash value sequence;
in response to a second user input:
determine that a second calculated hash value sequence is similar to the second hash value sequence;
cause the display of the stored media content item to not display a portion of the stored media content item between a first location in the stored media content item associated with the first calculated hash value sequence and a second location in the stored media content item associated with the second calculated hash value sequence.
16 . The media device of claim 15 , wherein the received version of the media content item comprises a broadcast version recorded locally at the media device.
17 . The media device of claim 15 , wherein the received version of the media content item comprises a transcoded version distributed to the media device.
18 . The media device of claim 15 , wherein the received version of the media content item comprises a duplicative content segment having a duplicative segment position different from the first position in the media content item, the duplicative content segment associated with a duplicative hash value sequence of in-band data in the media content indicating the duplicative segment position, the one or more computer readable storage media including further instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the media device to:
determine a third calculated hash value data sequence is similar to the first hash value data sequence; in response to the second user input: cause display of the stored media content item to display the duplicative content segment at a third location in the stored media content item associated with the third calculated hash value sequence.
19 . The media device of claim 15 , wherein the received version of the media content item comprises a cloud DVR version distributed to the media device.
20 . The media device of claim 15 , wherein causing display of the stored media content item to not display the portion of the stored media content item between the first location and the second location in the stored media content item further comprises:
calculating an offset associated with the second location, the offset comprising a current time associated with the received version of the media content item at the media device added to a difference between a time associated with the second location and a current stream time associated with the media content item, the current stream time based on the first position in the media content item.

The media device of claim 20 , wherein the second user input comprises a selection of a timeline user interface, the selection indicating the second location, the one or more computer readable storage media including further instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the media device to:
