. A contact lens comprising a structure formed from an optically clear, biocompatible, composite comprising a silica component and a fibrillar component.

. The contact lens of claim 11 wherein the fibrillar component is collagen.

. The contact lens of claim 11 wherein the fibrillar component is soluble collagen.

. The contact lens of claim 11 further comprising an osmolyte.

. The contact lens of claim 11 further comprising a therapeutic agent.

. The contact lens of claim 11 fabricated to protect the eye or promote healing of eye tissue.

. The contact lens of claim 11 comprising a silica component/fibrillar component ratio of from 40:1 to 1:40.

. A method of using a contact lens as described herein.

. (canceled)
