Abstract

A method of retrieval of items of particular relevance from a particular domain. A processor receives from a remote computing device a resource-identifying string that has a combination of a predefined notation and a resource-related sub-string. The processor uses the resource-identifying string to retrieve a subset of data items from within a data set, the subset of data items relating to a subset of resources within a set of resources available in be served by the particular domain over a distributed network. The processor uses the subset of data items to generate a list of the subset of resources and serves the list to the remote computing device.

We claim: 
     
         1 . A method of serving over a distributed network during a connection session between a processor and a remote computing device a list of resources of particular relevance, the method comprising:
 receiving by the processor, a portion of a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) comprising a resource-identifying string that is comprised of a combination of 1) a predefined notation and 2) a resource-related sub-string associated to the predefined notation,   wherein the resource-identifying string has not been created using executable instructions previously served by the processor to the remote computing device during the connection session and the resource-identifying string has not been created by executable instructions executed on the remote computing device,   parsing by the processor the resource-identifying string wherein the predefined notation is used as a logical operator that is associated to the resource-related substring,   the processor using the resource-identifying string and its associated logical operator to retrieve a subset of data items from within a data set, wherein the subset of data items relates to a subset of resources within a set of resources available to be served by the processor over the distributed network, the data set and the set of resources respectively residing within one or more tangible computer-readable memory operatively connected to the processor,   generating by the processor a list of the subset of resources, and   serving the list to the remote computing device by the processor over the distributed network.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the resource-identifying string has been received by an address bar component of a distributed network browser application running on the remote computing device. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the predefined notation precedes the resource-related sub-string within the resource-identifying string. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the data items are comprised within a data structure residing within the one or more computer-readable memory, and wherein the data structure is selected from the group of data structures consisting of a database, a container, an array, a list, a stack, a queue, a tree, a graph, a map and a hash. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the data items are text strings comprised within one or more documents, the one or mere documents residing within the one or more computer-readable memory, the one or more documents being of a type selected from the group of document types consisting of searchable pdf documents, word processing documents, HTML documents and XML documents. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the resource-identifying string is received by the processor comprised within a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) Get request, 
     
     
         7 . A method of serving over a distributed network during a connection session between a processor and a remote computing device a list of resources of particular relevance, the method comprising:
 receiving by the processor a portion of a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) comprising a resource-identifying string that is comprised of at least one combination of 1) a predefined notation and 2) a resource-related sub-string associated to the predefined notation, and the resource-identifying string has not been created using executable instructions previously served by the processor to the remote computing device during the connection session and the resource-identifying string has not been created by executable instructions executed on the remote computing device,   parsing by the processor the resource-identifying string to identify a particular domain, and wherein the predefined notation is used as a logical operator that is associated to the resource-related substring,   executing a data search within the particular domain by the processor, using the resource-related sub-string and its associated logical operator, the data search formatted to a set of search standards appropriate to the resource-identifying string and to a data structure,   retrieving by the processor a subset of data items from within the data structure, the subset of data items relating to a subset of resources within a set of resources available to be served from the particular domain by the processor over the distributed network, the data structure and the set of resources residing within one or more tangible computer-readable memory operatively connected to the processor,   generating by the processor a list of the subset of resources, and   serving the list to the remote computing device by the processor over the distributed network,   
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 7  wherein the predefined notation precedes the resource-related sub-string within the resource-identifying string. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 7  wherein the resource-identifying string has been received by an address bar component of a distributed network browser application running on the remote computing device. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 7  wherein the predefined notation comprises at least one occurrence of a text string selected from the group of text strings consisting of the ̂ symbol, the ASCII decimal equivalent of the ̂ symbol, the ASCII hexadecimal equivalent of the ̂ symbol, and the HTML number equivalent of the ̂ symbol. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 10  wherein the predefined notation comprises a single occurrence of the text string, and the single occurrence is used by the processor as a logical inclusive when retrieving the subset of data items from within the data set. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 10  wherein the predefined notation comprises a plurality of occurrences of the text string. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 12  wherein the predefined notation comprises a double occurrence of the text string, and the double occurrence is used by the processor as a logical exclusive when retrieving the subset of data items from within the data set. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 10  wherein the resource-identifying string comprises at least two resource-related sub-strings, each resource-related sub-string preceded by at least one occurrence of the text string. 
     
     
         15 . A method of retrieving by a computing device over a distributed network during a connection session between the computing device and a remote processor operatively connected to a particular domain, a list of resources of particular relevance, the resources being available to be served from the particular domain by the remote processor over the distributed network, the method comprising:
 parsing by the computing device a resource-identifying string comprised within a Uniform Resource identifier (URI), the resource-identifying string comprising at least one combination of 1) a predefined notation, and 2) a resource related sub-string that is associated to the predefined notation and where the resource-identifying string has not ten created using executable instructions previously served to the computing device by the remote processor during the connection session, nor has the resource identifying string been created by executable instructions executed on the computing device.   sending by the computing device the resource-identifying string to the remote processor, and   receiving by the computing device from the remote processor a list of one or more resources, the one or more resources being a subset of a set of resources available to be served from the particular domain by the remote processor over the distributed network.   
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 15  wherein the resource-identifying string has been received as input to an address bar within a distributed network browsing application executing on the computing device, the address bar being displayed through a video interface operatively connected to the computing device, the input being received through an input interface operatively connected to the computing device. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 15  wherein the resource-identifying string is sent by the computing device to the remote processor comprised within an HTTP Get request. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 15  wherein the predefined notation is used by the processor as a logical function operator and precedes the resource-related sub-string within the resource-identifying string. 
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 15  wherein the predefined notation comprises at least one occurrence of a text string selected from the group of text strings consisting of the ̂ symbol, the ASCII decimal equivalent of the ̂ symbol, the ASCII hexadecimal equivalent of the ̂ symbol, and the HTML number equivalent of the ̂ symbol. 
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 10  wherein the predefined notation comprises a plurality of occurrences of the text string.
