Abstract

Methods and compounds for research and treatment of portal hypertension. The use of racemic or non-racemic mixtures of furopyridine isomers to stimulate eNOS function in sinusoidal endothelial cells and to increase NO production in both normal sinusoidal endothelial cells and injured endothelial cells.

         1 . A method of treating hepatic disorders by administration of therapeutically effective amounts of cicletanine. 
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the disorder includes cirrhosis. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the disorder includes NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis). 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the disorder includes NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the disorder includes hepatitis. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1  further including increasing endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity (through phosphorylation at Ser-1179) via protein kinase B (Akt) and MAP kinase/Erk signaling with administration of cicletanine.
