Abstract
A user interface includes a tactile interface on a client device that allows users to interact with social networking system content in a manner that is optimized for touch screens and mobile devices. The tactile interface allows users to efficiently navigate the social networking system data as well as to capture new content for upload to the social networking system. New content may be captured in a way that allows the user to preview the content in-context.

1 . A method comprising:
displaying, on a display of a computing device, a plurality of stories in a list including one or more time boundaries between adjacent stories, each story including at least one content item; receiving a user input to the display of the computing device to scroll the list from a first story on a first side of a time boundary, of the one or more time boundaries, to a second story on a second side of the time boundary; responsive to the user input, causing the list to scroll at a first velocity from the first story to the time boundary; responsive to reaching the time boundary, causing the list to scroll at a second velocity, the second velocity relative to an input velocity provided by the user being lower than the first velocity; and causing the list to scroll at the first velocity from the time boundary to the second story.
2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
responsive to approaching an end of stories of the plurality of stories in the list that have been downloaded, requesting new stories for display in the list; and causing the list to scroll at the second velocity while the new stories are downloaded and presented for display in the list.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first set of content items comprise a plurality of images from a photo album.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first story and the second story of the plurality of stories are concurrently displayed on the display of the computing device in a vertically-scrollable feed and arranged in a vertical list according to associated time periods, wherein the first story is associated with a plurality of first content items and the second story is associated with a plurality of second content items.
5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein a subset of the plurality of first content items are concurrently displayed on the display with the first story and a subset of the plurality of second content items are concurrently displayed on the display with the second story.
6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the displayed first content items are arranged in a horizontally-scrollable list of the first story and the displayed second content items are arranged in a horizontally-scrollable list of the second story.
7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein a content item of the first set of content items and the second set of content items are cropped at an edge of the display and providing an ability to scroll horizontally in a direction associated with the cropped content item in the first story and the second story.
8 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising:
receiving a horizontal scrolling user input comprising a horizontal swipe over the first set of content items on the display of the computing device; and scrolling only the first set of content items on the display horizontally without moving the second set of content items of the second story in the vertically-scrollable feed.
9 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising:
moderating an initial scrolling velocity of the first set of content items from the horizontal scrolling user input using a physical friction model, a scrolling friction coefficient of the physical friction model increasing for at least a subset of the first set of content items as a function of position in the first horizontally-scrollable list, wherein the horizontal scrolling user input results in a different subset of the first set of content items being displayed with the first story.
10 . A method comprising:
presenting, for display on a computing device, a plurality of stories from an online system, the plurality of stories being presented in a list including one or more time boundaries between adjacent stories; receiving a scrolling user input to scroll the list; responsive to the user input,
causing the list to scroll at a first velocity from a first story on a first side of a time boundary of the one or more time boundaries to the time boundary;
causing, in response to reaching the time boundary, the list to scroll at a second velocity, the second velocity relative to an input velocity provided by the user being lower than the first velocity; and
causing the list to scroll at the first velocity from the time boundary to a second story on a second side of the time boundary.
11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the first story is associated with a plurality of first content items and the second story is associated with a plurality of second content items, and wherein a subset of the plurality of first content items are concurrently displayed by the computing device with the first story and a subset of the plurality of second content items are concurrently displayed by the computing device with the second story.
12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the displayed first content items are arranged in a horizontally-scrollable list of the first story and the displayed second content items are arranged in a horizontally-scrollable list of the second story.
13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein a content item of the first set of content items and the second set of content items are cropped at an edge of the display and providing an ability to scroll horizontally in a direction associated with the cropped content item in the first story and the second story.
14 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising:
receiving a horizontal scrolling user input comprising a horizontal swipe over the first set of content items on the display of the computing device; and scrolling only the first set of content items on the display horizontally without moving the second set of content items of the second story in the vertically-scrollable feed.
15 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising:
moderating an initial scrolling velocity of the first set of content items from the horizontal scrolling user input using a physical friction model, a scrolling friction coefficient of the physical friction model increasing for at least a subset of the first set of content items as a function of position in the first horizontally-scrollable list, wherein the horizontal scrolling user input results in a different subset of the first set of content items being displayed with the first story.
16 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions, that when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:
display, on a display of a computing device, a plurality of stories in a list including one or more time boundaries between adjacent stories, each story including at least one content item; receive a user input to the display of the computing device to scroll the list from a first story on a first side of a time boundary, of the one or more time boundaries, to a second story on a second side of the time boundary; cause the list to scroll at a first velocity from the first story to the time boundary response to the user input; cause the list to scroll at a second velocity, the second velocity relative to an input velocity provided by the user being lower than the first velocity in response to reaching the time boundary; and cause the list to scroll at the first velocity from the time boundary to the second story.
17 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the instructions, that when executed by the processor, further cause the processor to:
request new stories for display in the list in response to approaching an end of stories of the plurality of stories in the list that have been downloaded; and cause the list to scroll at the second velocity while the new stories are downloaded and presented for display in the list.
18 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the first story is associated with a plurality of first content items and the second story is associated with a plurality of second content items, a subset of the plurality of first content items are concurrently displayed by the computing device with the first story and a subset of the plurality of second content items are concurrently displayed by the computing device with the second story, and the displayed first content items are arranged in a horizontally-scrollable list of the first story and the displayed second content items are arranged in a horizontally-scrollable list of the second story.
19 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 , wherein a content item of the first set of content items and the second set of content items are cropped at an edge of the display and providing an ability to scroll horizontally in a direction associated with the cropped content item in the first story and the second story.
20 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 , further comprising:
