Abstract
Various systems and methods for improving the usability of continuous glucose monitors and drug delivery pumps are described.

7 . A method of adjusting glucose level alarm thresholds and alarm enunciation delay times in an electronic system having continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and insulin delivery system information, the method comprising:
using a model based state estimation, determining a predicted future glucose level for a user based on the CGM and insulin delivery system information; and alerting the user if the predicted future glucose level falls outside of a predetermined acceptable range.
8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the model based state estimation is implemented with a Kalman filter.
9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the model based state estimation assesses the likelihood that a CGM measurement that exceeds a high or low threshold is due to a true event.
10 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the model based state estimation assesses the likelihood that a CGM measurement that exceeds a high or low threshold is due to a sensor artifact.
11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the likelihood is determined by comparing a difference between the CGM measurement and interstitial glucose computed by the model based state estimation prior to the CGM measurement.
12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein an alarm is enunciated if a given CGM measurement exceeds a threshold level for a duration, the method further comprising adjusting the threshold level and the duration based on the predicted future glucose level.

The method of claim 12 , wherein the alarm is a low threshold alarm and the threshold level is a low threshold alarm value, wherein a CGM signal, decreasing towards a low threshold alarm value, that is not accompanied by a corresponding amount of insulin history will result in the low threshold alarm being made less sensitive by lowering the low threshold alarm value and/or increasing the duration.

The method of claim 12 , wherein the alarm is a low threshold alarm and the threshold level is a low threshold alarm value, wherein a CGM signal decreasing towards the low threshold alarm value, that is accompanied by an insulin history results in the low threshold alarm being made more sensitive by increasing the low threshold alarm value and/or decreasing the duration.

The method of claim 12 , wherein the alarm is a high threshold alarm and the threshold level is a high threshold alarm value, wherein a CGM signal approaching the high threshold alarm value, that is not accompanied by an appreciable amount of insulin history results in the high threshold alarm being made more sensitive by lowering the high threshold alarm value and/or decreasing the duration.

The method of claim 12 , wherein the alarm is a high threshold alarm and the threshold level is a high threshold alarm value, wherein a CGM signal approaching the high threshold alarm value that is accompanied by an appreciable amount of insulin history results in the high threshold alarm being made less sensitive by increasing the high threshold alarm value and/or increasing the duration.

18 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the predicted future glucose level is determined based on information entered by the user about an amount of exercise or state of health of the user.
19 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the system comprises a continuous glucose monitor and an insulin delivery system.
20 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising making the low threshold alarm less sensitive by lowering the low threshold alarm value and increasing the duration.
21 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising making the low threshold alarm more sensitive by increasing the low threshold alarm value and decreasing the duration.
22 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising making the high threshold alarm more sensitive by lowering the high threshold alarm value and decreasing the duration.
