Abstract

A system and method for operating a reward points accumulation and redemption program wherein a user earns reward points from a plurality of independent reward points issuing entities, with each tracking the user's earned reward points in a user reward point account stored on a multi-function card (such as a frequent flyer account or a credit card loyalty account). The multi-function card is adapted to aggregate some or all of the user's earned reward points from the reward accounts and credit the aggregated points into a single reward exchange account on the multi-function card. The user may then select an item for purchase with the accumulated reward points from the multi-function card. The item is provided to the user in exchange for a subset or all of the reward points from the multi-function card.

         35 . A method of using a portable multi-function device for executing a purchase transaction with a point of sale terminal comprising:
 processing circuitry of the portable multi-function device selecting from a stored user profile a default credit or debit account for executing a purchase transaction with a point of sale terminal,   the processing circuitry providing an option to override the default credit or debit account with a different credit or debit account stored in the user profile for executing the purchase transaction,   the processing circuitry receiving via a user input device on the portable multi-function device a user selection to override the default credit or debit account with a different credit or debit account stored in the user profile,   the processing circuitry overriding the default credit or debit account with the different credit or debit account selected via the user input device for executing at least partial payment for the purchase transaction, and   the processing circuitry executing the purchase transaction with the point of sale terminal;   wherein the default credit or debit account is used by the portable multi-function device for all purchase transactions unless overridden by a user selection with a different credit or debit account stored in the user profile.   
     
     
         36 . The method of  claim 35  further comprising the step of
 the processing circuitry storing, based on the purchase transaction, rewards to at least one reward account stored on the portable multi-function device. 
 
     
     
         37 . The method of  claim 35  further comprising the step of
 the processing circuitry providing an option for making at least partial payment to the point of sale terminal by using rewards previously stored in at least one reward account stored on the portable multi-function device. 
 
     
     
         38 . The method of  claim 35  wherein the user input device comprises a button. 
     
     
         39 . The method of  claim 35  wherein the portable multi-function device comprises a smart card. 
     
     
         40 . The method of  claim 35  wherein the portable multi-function device comprises a peripheral device. 
     
     
         41 . A portable multi-function device comprising processing circuitry, program storage, and a user input device; wherein the processing circuitry is programmed via instructions in the program storage to
 select from a stored user profile a default credit or debit account for executing a purchase transaction with a point of sale terminal,   provide an option to override the default credit or debit account with a different credit or debit account stored in the user profile for executing the purchase transaction,   receive via the user input device a user selection to override the default credit or debit account with a different credit or debit account stored in the user profile,   override the default credit or debit account with the different credit or debit account selected via the user input device for executing at least partial payment for the purchase transaction, and
 execute the purchase transaction with the point of sale terminal; 
   
       wherein the default credit or debit account is used by the portable multi-function device for all purchase transactions unless overridden by a user selection with a different credit or debit account stored in the user profile. 
     
     
         42 . The portable multi-function device of  claim 41  wherein the processing circuitry is further programmed to store, based on the purchase transaction, rewards to at least one reward account stored on the portable multi-function device.

The portable multi-function device of  claim 41 , wherein the processing circuitry is programmed to provide an option to make at least partial payment to the point of sale terminal by using rewards previously stored in at least one reward account stored on the portable multi-function device. 
     
     
         44 . The portable multi-function device of  claim 41  wherein the user input device comprises a button. 
     
     
         45 . The portable multi-function device of  claim 41  comprising a smart card.

         47 . In combination, a portable multi-function device and a point of sale terminal; wherein
 the portable multi-function device comprises processing circuitry, program storage, and a user input device; wherein   the processing circuitry is programmed via instructions in the program storage to
 select from a stored user profile a default credit or debit account for executing a purchase transaction with the point of sale terminal, 
 provide an option to override the default credit or debit account with a different credit or debit account stored in the user profile for executing the purchase transaction, 
 receive via the user input device a user selection to override the default credit or debit account with a different credit or debit account stored in the user profile, 
 override the default credit or debit account with the different credit or debit account selected via the user input device for executing at least partial payment for the purchase transaction, and 
 execute the purchase transaction with the point of sale terminal, 
   wherein the default credit or debit account is used by the portable multi-function device for all purchase transactions unless overridden by a user selection with a different credit or debit account stored in the user profile   
       and
 the point of sale terminal comprises
 reading circuitry for reading the portable multi-function device, 
 
 a display screen, and 
 an interconnection to a computer network for effecting payment for the purchase transaction with the portable multi-function device. 
 
     
     
         48 . The combination of  claim 47  wherein the processing circuitry is further programmed to store, based on the purchase transaction, rewards to at least one reward account stored on the portable multi-function device. 
     
     
         49 . The combination of  claim 47 , wherein the processing circuitry is programmed to
 provide an option to make at least partial payment to the point of sale terminal by using rewards previously stored in at least one reward account stored on the portable multi-function device.
