Claims

Abstract

A garment for use in a wide variety of aquatic activities is described. The garment includes an elastomeric torso element running from a user's shoulders to the lower thigh area with tubular portions for the user's upper legs, and may include elastomeric leg coverings designed to cover the rest of the user's legs and to be detachably coupled to the torso element with a fastening mechanism. The top portion of the torso element and the tubular leg portions of the torso element can be folded over and fastened in a compacted position, easing movement in the garment when full coverage is not needed. The garment may include insulative boots for the user's feet, and the leg coverings may have built-in gravel guards that overlap the boots, preventing debris from entering into the boots.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A garment for aquatic activities, comprising:
 an elastomeric torso element having front and back portions configured to cover the front and back of a user's torso, the torso element open at the top corresponding to a shoulder area, and having two tubular extensions corresponding to a location from a waist area to a thigh area configured to cover the user's upper legs; and   a first fastening mechanism for detachably connecting the front and back portions of the torso element at the shoulder area.   
     
     
         2 . The garment of  claim 1 , wherein the first fastening mechanism comprises a hook and loop fastener. 
     
     
         3 . The garment of  claim 1 , wherein the first fastening mechanism comprises a pressure operated snap fastener. 
     
     
         4 . The garment of  claim 1 , further comprising a second fastening mechanism located vertically along one side of the torso element for allowing the front and back portions of the torso element to be separated along the side of the torso element. 
     
     
         5 . The garment of  claim 4 , wherein the second fastening mechanism comprises one or more hook and loop fasteners. 
     
     
         6 . The garment of  claim 4 , wherein the second fastening mechanism comprises a zipper. 
     
     
         7 . The garment of  claim 4 , wherein the second fastening mechanism comprises a plurality of pressure operated snap fasteners. 
     
     
         8 . The garment of  claim 1 , further comprising tubular elastomeric leg coverings configured to cover the user's legs from a thigh area to a lower leg area. 
     
     
         9 . The garment of  claim 8 , further comprising a third fastening mechanism for detachably connecting the leg coverings to the tubular extensions of the torso element. 
     
     
         10 . The garment of  claim 9 , wherein the third fastening mechanism comprises one or more hook and loop fasteners. 
     
     
         11 . The garment of  claim 9 , wherein the third fastening mechanism comprises a zipper. 
     
     
         12 . The garment of  claim 9 , wherein the third fastening mechanism comprises a plurality of pressure operated snap fasteners. 
     
     
         13 . The garment of  claim 1 , further comprising a fourth fastening mechanism for fastening the front and back portions of the torso element to themselves in a folded down position. 
     
     
         14 . The garment of  claim 13 , wherein the fourth fastening mechanism comprises one or more hook and loop fasteners. 
     
     
         15 . The garment of  claim 13 , wherein the fourth fastening mechanism comprises one or more pressure operated snap fasteners. 
     
     
         16 . The garment of  claim 1 , further comprising a fifth fastening mechanism for fastening the tubular portions of the torso element to themselves in a folded up position. 
     
     
         17 . The garment of  claim 16 , wherein the fifth fastening mechanism comprises one or more hook and loop fasteners. 
     
     
         18 . The garment of  claim 16 , wherein the fifth fastening mechanism comprises one or more pressure operated snap fasteners. 
     
     
         19 . The garment of  claim 8 , further comprising a pair of insulative boots configured to cover the user's feet and ankles up to the lower leg area of the leg coverings. 
     
     
         20 . The garment of  claim 19 , wherein the leg coverings further comprise a second layer of tubular elastomeric material attached to each leg covering and configured to fold down over the tops of the insulative boots so as to prevent solid materials from entering the tops of the insulative boots.
