Abstract
The present invention relates to methods for treating inflammatory bowel disease and other indications by inhibiting leptin activity.

1 . A method for treating inflammatory bowel disease, comprising:
administering to a human patient having Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, a therapeutically effective amount of a protein that binds to and antagonizes leptin, wherein the protein is selected from the group consisting of an antibody, an antibody fragment and a soluble receptor for leptin.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the human patient has Crohn's disease.
3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the protein is an antibody or antibody fragment that binds to and antagonizes leptin.
4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the protein is a monoclonal antibody or a fragment of a monoclonal antibody.
5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the protein is a soluble receptor for leptin.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the human patient has ulcerative colitis.
7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the protein is an antibody or antibody fragment that binds to and antagonizes leptin.
8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the protein is a monoclonal antibody or a fragment of a monoclonal antibody.
9 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the protein is a soluble receptor for leptin.
10 . A method for treating inflammatory bowel disease, comprising:
administering to a human patient having Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, a therapeutically effective amount of a protein that binds to and antagonizes a leptin receptor, wherein the protein is selected from the group consisting of an antibody and an antibody fragment.
11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the human patient has Crohn's disease.
12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the protein is an antibody or antibody fragment that binds to and antagonizes the leptin receptor.
13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the protein is a monoclonal antibody or a fragment of a monoclonal antibody.
14 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the human patient has ulcerative colitis.
15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the protein is an antibody or antibody fragment that binds to and antagonizes leptin.
