Two-Piece Catheter Securement System and Method for Using Same
Abstract
A two-piece catheter securement system has a separable, stand-alone fixation pad with an adhesive undersurface and an antimicrobial flap. On an upper surface of the pad are cooperative first attachment members. A separable, stand-alone upper capture and retention shell has an outer shell wall. The first and second ends of the shell may have a plurality of slots for capturing and retaining administration and catheter tubing. The shell has an inner shell ceiling having a plurality of spaced apart second attachment members thereon. The first and second attachment members are aligned to cooperatively engage when the shell is urged into releasable engagement with the pad with the slots capturing and retaining the tubes. The shell is fully separable from the pad when the cooperating attachment members are disengaged. The shell may be reused and the pad disposed.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedI claim:
1 . A separable, two-piece catheter securement system for use on a patient requiring a catheter having at least one catheter tube and a hub, said device comprising:
a separate, stand-alone, lower fixation pad having an upper surface and a lower surface, said lower surface having an adhesive thereon for fixation of said separate pad to the skin of said patient, said adhesive covered by a removable backing sheet, said upper surface of said separate pad having a plurality of upwardly depending, spaced apart, first attachment members, and a separate, stand-alone upper capture and retention shell not integrally a part of said separate, stand-alone pad, said shell having first and second ends, said second end having an end wall having at least one slot opening for capturing and retaining said catheter tube, said upper capture and retention shell having on an inner shell surface a plurality of spaced apart second attachment members aligned to cooperatively engage said first attachment members on said separate, stand-alone pad when said shell is urged into engagement with said lower fixation pad connecting said pad and said shell as an integral unit with said at least one slot opening capturing and retaining said catheter tube and said inner shell surface not engaging with said catheter hub, said shell adapted to be fully separable from said pad when said first and said second attachment members are disengaged.
2 . The two-piece catheter securement system of claim 1 wherein said first attachment members are vertical studs and said second attachment members are sockets, said sockets adapted to releasably engage and secure with said studs therein in an interference fit when said shell is urged into engagement with said lower fixation pad thereby connecting said pad and said shell as an integral unit.
3 . The two-piece catheter securement system of claim 2 wherein said fixation pad has a catheter tube locator rib on a second end of said upper surface and a fenestration opening extending from a first end of said pad inwardly to a midsection of said pad.
4 . A separable two-piece catheter securement system for use on a patient requiring catheters having one or more administration tubes and at least one catheter tube and a catheter hub, said device comprising:
a separate, stand-alone lower fixation pad having an upper surface and a lower surface, said lower surface having an adhesive thereon, said adhesive covered by a removable backing sheet, said upper surface of said separate pad having a plurality of spaced apart, first attachment members; and a separate, stand-alone upper capture and retention shell not integrally a part of said separate, stand-alone pad, said shell having first and second end walls, said second end wall having one or more tapering slot openings for capturing and retaining said one or more administration tubes, said first end wall having at least one tapering slot opening for capturing and retaining said at least one catheter tube, said upper capture and retention shell having on an inner shell surface a plurality of spaced apart second attachment members aligned to cooperatively engage said first attachment member on said separate, stand-alone pad when said shell is urged into engagement with said lower fixation pad connecting said pad and said shell as an integral unit, said tapering slot openings capturing and retaining said tubes, and said inner shell surface not engaging with said catheter hub, said shell adapted to be fully separable from said pad when said first and said second attachment members are disengaged.
5 . The two-piece catheter securement system of claim 4 wherein said first attachment members are vertical studs and said second attachment members are sockets, said sockets adapted to releasably engage and secure said studs therein in an interference fit when said shell is urged into engagement with said lower fixation pad.
6 . The two-piece securement system of claim 4 wherein said lower fixation pad has a first locator rib on a first end of said upper surface, said second locator ribs having at least one receiving slot adapted to locate and receive said at least one catheter tube, and a second locator rib on a second end of said upper surface, said first locator rib having one or more receiving slots adapted to locate and receive said one or more administrative tubes.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
