Abstract

A composition for reducing bacterial biofilm formation after endodontic therapy comprising water, ethanol, benzalkonium chloride, citric acid, and Triton X-100. A method of making a composition for reducing bacterial biofilm. A method for reducing bacterial biofilm formation after a dental procedure.

         27 . A composition for reducing bacterial biofilm formation in connection with a dental procedure, the composition comprising:
 30-80% by weight water;   15-40% by weight ethanol;   5-20% by weight benzalkonium chloride;   2-8% by weight citric acid; and   0.05-0.2% by weight of a nonionic surfactant.   
     
     
         28 . A method for reducing bacterial biofilm formation in connection with a dental procedure, wherein the method comprises contacting a dental tissue with a composition according to  claim 27 . 
     
     
         29 . The method of  claim 28 , wherein the dental procedure is selected from the group consisting of an endodontic procedure, preparation for placement of a restorative material, and preparation for placement of a dental crown. 
     
     
         30 . A composition for reducing bacterial biofilm formation in connection with a dental procedure, the composition comprising:
 30-80% by weight water;   15-40% by weight of an alcohol;   5-20% by weight of a biocide;   2-8% by weight of a chelating agent; and   0.05-0.2% by weight of a surfactant.   
     
     
         31 . The composition of  claim 30 , wherein the water is distilled water. 
     
     
         32 . The composition of  claim 30 , wherein the alcohol is ethanol. 
     
     
         33 . The composition of  claim 30 , wherein the biocide is benzalkonium chloride. 
     
     
         34 . The composition of  claim 30 , wherein the chelating agent is citric acid. 
     
     
         35 . The composition of  claim 30 , wherein the surfactant is a nonionic surfactant. 
     
     
         36 . A method for reducing bacterial biofilm formation in connection with a dental procedure, wherein the method comprises contacting a dental tissue with a composition according to  claim 30 . 
     
     
         37 . The method of  claim 36 , wherein the dental procedure is selected from the group consisting of an endodontic procedure, preparation for placement of a restorative material, and preparation for placement of a dental crown. 
     
     
         38 . A method of making a composition for reducing bacterial biofilm formation, the method comprising:
 adding alcohol to water;   adding a biocide to the water and the alcohol;   adding a chelating agent to the water, the alcohol, and the biocide; and   adding a surfactant to the water, the alcohol, the biocide, and the chelating agent.   
     
     
         39 . The method of  claim 38 , wherein 50 ml of the alcohol is added to 50 ml of the water or 70 ml of the alcohol is added to 30 ml of the water. 
     
     
         40 . The method of  claim 39 , further comprising adding 30 ml of water to 50 ml of the result of 50 ml of the alcohol being added to 50 ml of the water or 70 ml of the alcohol being added to 30 ml of the water. 
     
     
         41 . The method of  claim 38 , wherein 13 g or 13 ml of the biocide is added to the water and the alcohol. 
     
     
         42 . The method of  claim 38 , wherein 4.6 g of the chelating agent is added to the water, the alcohol, and the biocide. 
     
     
         43 . The method of  claim 38 , wherein 0.1 ml of the surfactant is added to the water, the alcohol, the biocide, and the chelating agent. 
     
     
         44 . The method of  claim 38 , further comprising, after adding the surfactant to the water, the alcohol, the biocide, and the chelating agent, adding water to result in a final volume of 100 ml of the water, the alcohol, the biocide, the chelating agent, and the surfactant. 
     
     
         45 . The method of  claim 38 , wherein the water is distilled water. 
     
     
         46 . The method of  claim 38 , wherein the alcohol is ethanol. 
     
     
         47 . The method of  claim 38 , wherein the biocide is benzalkonium chloride. 
     
     
         48 . The method of  claim 38 , wherein the chelating agent is citric acid. 
     
     
         49 . The method of  claim 38 , wherein the surfactant is a nonionic surfactant.
