Electronic program guide with digital storage
Abstract
An interactive television program guide system with digital storage is provided. The program guide gives users the ability to store information associated with recorded programs in a directory in the digital storage device thereby providing easy access to program information. The program guide may also provide a global media library for indicating the programs stored on removable storage media used with the program guide. The guide may also allow the user to manage and maintain a user media library to do the same. Non-time-sensitive data associated with recorded programs may be stored in a way that allows the user to interact with the data on playback as if the program were being originally aired. The program guide also allows the user to define “super-programs” for playback of a sequence of stored programs or program segments.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 - 105 . (canceled)
106 . A method of playing back segments of a stored program using user equipment, comprising:
receiving a user selection, from a program guide, of a program for storage on a digital storage device; storing the program on the digital storage device; receiving a user definition of segments of the stored program, wherein receiving the user definition comprises the steps of:
receiving a user selection of at least one portion of the stored program; and
defining a playback sequence comprising segments of the program stored on the digital storage device, wherein the playback sequence does not include the at least one portion of the stored program, and wherein the playback sequence specifies an order in which the segments of the program will be played back with associated data by the user equipment.
107 . The method of claim 106 , further comprising:
generating a list of segments of the stored program based on the playback sequence; and displaying the list of segments of the stored program, wherein the list of segments includes listings associated with two or more segments of the stored program and indicates to a user the playback sequence.
108 . The method of claim 106 , wherein the order specified by the playback sequence is independent from when the stored program was stored on the digital storage device.
109 . The method of claim 106 , further comprising:
receiving a user input indicating a user request to add a segment of the stored program to the playback sequence; and adding the segment of the stored program to a user specified point in the playback sequence.
110 . The method of claim 109 , wherein the user specified point is the end of the playback sequence.
111 . The method of claim 106 , further comprising playing back the segments of programs in the playback sequence in the order specified.
112 . The method of claim 106 , further comprising storing the playback sequence.
113 . The method of claim 106 , further comprising editing the playback sequence.
114 . The method of claim 113 , wherein editing the playback sequence comprises re-ordering the playback sequence.
115 . The method of claim 106 , further comprising receiving user input, using the program guide, to transfer the playback sequence to a secondary storage device.
116 . A user system that provides means for playing back segments of programs using user equipment, comprising:
control circuitry configured to:
receive a user selection, from a program guide, of a program for storage on a digital storage device;
store the program on the digital storage device; and
receive a user definition of segments of the stored program, wherein the receiving comprises:
receiving a user selection of at least one portion of the stored program; and
defining a playback sequence comprising segments of programs stored on the digital storage device, wherein the playback sequence does not include the at least one portion of the stored program, and wherein the playback sequence specifies an order in which the segments of the stored program will be played back with associated data by the user equipment.
117 . The user system of claim 116 , the control circuitry further configured to:
generate a list of segments of the stored program based on the playback sequence; and display the list of segments of the stored program, wherein the list includes listings associated with two or more segments of the stored program and indicates to a user the playback sequence.
118 . The user system of claim 116 , wherein the order specified by the playback sequence is independent from when the segments of the stored program were stored on the digital storage device.
119 . The user system of claim 116 , the control circuitry further configured to:
receive a user input indicating a user request to add another segment of a program to the playback sequence; and add the segment of the program to a user specified point in the playback sequence.
120 . The user system of claim 119 , wherein the user specified point is the end of the playback sequence.
121 . The user system of claim 116 , the control circuitry further configured to play back the segments of the stored program in the playback sequence in the order specified.
122 . The user system of claim 116 , the control circuitry further configured to store the playback sequence.
123 . The user system of claim 116 , the control circuitry further configured to edit the playback sequence.
124 . The user system of claim 123 , wherein editing the playback sequence comprises re-ordering the playback sequence.
125 . The user system of claim 116 , the control circuitry further configured to:
receive user input, using the program guide, to transfer the playback sequence to a secondary storage device.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
