Abstract

This invention discloses methods and apparatus for patterning Multi-piece ophthalmic Insert and Ophthalmic lenses comprising Inserts. In some embodiments, an ophthalmic lens is cast molded from a silicone hydrogel and the lens includes a sealed and encapsulated Multi-piece ophthalmic Insert portion which has been patterned.

1 . A multi-piece insert device for an ophthalmic lens comprising:
 a back curve piece;   a front curve piece combined with the back curve piece to form a cavity therebetween;   a pattern of conductive material placed onto one or both of the front curve piece and the back curve piece;   at least one electronic component placed onto at least a portion of the pattern of conductive material; and   a colorant pattern placed onto a surface of the front curve piece such that it overlies the electronic component.   
     
     
         2 . The multi-piece insert device of  claim 1 , wherein the colorant pattern is a limbal ring pattern. 
     
     
         3 . The multi-piece insert device of  claim 2 , wherein the limbal ring pattern comprises a black colorant. 
     
     
         4 . The multi-piece insert device of  claim 1 , wherein the colorant pattern is an iris pattern. 
     
     
         5 . The multi-piece insert device of  claim 1 , wherein the colorant pattern is a camouflage pattern that obstructs the observance of the electrical component within the multi-piece insert device by changing the appearance of the electrical component. 
     
     
         6 . The multi-piece insert device of  claim 1 , wherein the front curve piece and the back curve piece are annular. 
     
     
         7 . The multi-piece insert device of  claim 6 , wherein the front curve piece and the back curve piece are placed outside of an optical zone of the ophthalmic lens. 
     
     
         8 . The multi-piece insert device of  claim 1 , wherein the back curve piece is annular. 
     
     
         9 . The multi-piece insert device of  claim 8 , wherein the back curve piece is placed outside of an optical zone of the ophthalmic lens. 
     
     
         10 . The multi-piece insert device of  claim 1 , additionally comprising a region located within the colorant pattern comprising a transparent window. 
     
     
         11 . The multi-piece insert device of  claim 10 , wherein the transparent window is a void made in the colorant pattern. 
     
     
         12 . The multi-piece insert device of  claim 10 , additionally comprising a photo detector located between the front curve piece and the back curve piece and behind the transparent window such that light may pass through the transparent window to the photo detector. 
     
     
         13 . The multi-piece insert device of  claim 12 , wherein the transparent window comprises a material that is transparent to light having specific wavelengths capable of being detected by the photo detector. 
     
     
         14 . The multi-piece insert device of  claim 12 , wherein the photo detector is capable of detecting changes in incident light so that it may detect when a wearer of the ophthalmic lens blinks. 
     
     
         15 . An ophthalmic lens device comprising:
 a multi-piece insert comprising a back curve piece, a front curve piece combined with the back curve piece to form a cavity therebetween, a conductive material placed onto one or both of the front curve piece and the back curve piece such that it is within the cavity, and at least one electronic component placed onto at least a portion of the conductive material;   an encapsulating layer comprising a hydrogel surrounding the multi-piece insert; and   a colorant pattern placed onto a surface of at least one of the front curve piece and the encapsulating layer such that it overlies the electronic component.   
     
     
         16 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 15 , wherein the colorant pattern is a limbal ring pattern. 
     
     
         17 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 16 , wherein the limbal ring pattern comprises a black colorant. 
     
     
         18 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 15 , wherein the colorant pattern is an iris pattern. 
     
     
         19 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 15 , wherein the colorant pattern is a camouflage pattern that obstructs the observance of the electrical component within the multi-piece insert by changing the appearance of the electrical component. 
     
     
         20 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 15 , wherein the front curve piece and the back curve piece are annular. 
     
     
         21 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 20 , wherein the front curve piece and the back curve piece are placed outside of an optical zone of the ophthalmic lens device. 
     
     
         22 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 15 , wherein the back curve piece is annular. 
     
     
         23 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 22 , wherein the back curve piece is placed outside of an optical zone of the ophthalmic lens device. 
     
     
         24 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 15 , additionally comprising a region located within the colorant pattern comprising a transparent window. 
     
     
         25 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 24 , wherein the transparent window is a void made in the colorant pattern. 
     
     
         26 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 24 , additionally comprising a photo detector located between the front curve piece and the back curve piece and behind the transparent window such that light may pass through the transparent window to the photo detector. 
     
     
         27 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 26 , wherein the transparent window comprises a material that is transparent to light having specific wavelengths capable of being detected by the photo detector. 
     
     
         28 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 26 , wherein the photo detector is capable of detecting changes in incident light so that it may detect when a wearer of the ophthalmic lens device blinks. 
     
     
         29 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 15 , wherein the colorant pattern is on the surface of the front curve piece. 
     
     
         30 . The ophthalmic lens device of  claim 15 , wherein the colorant pattern is on the surface of the hydrogel encapsulating layer.
