Abstract

A hand vacuum cleaner is provided with a wand mounted to the dirty fluid inlet of the hand vacuum cleaner and the wand has a distal inlet that is mounted on a surface cleaning head. The hand vacuum cleaner has a cyclonic cleaning stage. The dirty fluid inlet has a passage with a passage axis and the cyclonic cleaning stage has a longitudinal axis. The fluid flow motor is displaced from the passage axis in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis.

         28 . A hand vacuum cleaner comprising:
 a) a first cyclonic cleaning stage comprising a first cyclone having an openable bottom;   b) a second cyclonic cleaning stage located downstream from the first cyclonic cleaning stage and comprising a plurality of cyclones in parallel, a central longitudinal axis and an outer perimeter extending around the central longitudinal axis, each of the plurality of cyclones having a cyclone chamber;   c) a pre-motor filter positioned downstream from the second cyclonic cleaning stage and having filter material located within the outer perimeter of the second cyclonic cleaning stage;   d) a manifold positioned upstream of the pre-motor filter and downstream of the second cyclonic cleaning stage, the manifold is located within the outer perimeter of the second cyclonic cleaning stage; and,   e) a fluid flow motor that is downstream from the pre-motor filter.   
     
     
         29 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 28  wherein the manifold has an upper end which is positioned above an upper end of the cyclone chambers of the plurality of cyclones of the second cyclonic cleaning stage. 
     
     
         30 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 28  wherein the plurality of cyclones of the second cyclonic cleaning stage are arranged around a central portion and, after exiting the second cyclonic cleaning stage, air enters the central portion. 
     
     
         31 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 30  wherein air travels downwardly in the central portion. 
     
     
         32 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 28  wherein the pre-motor filter is removable in the direction of the central longitudinal axis. 
     
     
         33 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 28  wherein the pre-motor filter is removable through an opening in an upper end of the hand vacuum cleaner. 
     
     
         34 . A hand vacuum cleaner comprising:
 a) a first cyclonic cleaning stage comprising a first cyclone having an openable bottom;   b) a second cyclonic cleaning stage located downstream from the first cyclonic cleaning stage and comprising a plurality of cyclones in parallel, a central longitudinal axis and an outer perimeter extending around the central longitudinal axis;   c) a pre-motor filter positioned downstream from the second cyclonic cleaning stage and having filter material located within the outer perimeter of the second cyclonic cleaning stage; and,   d) a fluid flow motor that is downstream from the pre-motor filter, wherein the pre-motor filter is removable in the direction of the central longitudinal axis.   
     
     
         35 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 34  wherein the pre-motor filter has an upper end and a longitudinally spaced apart lower end and, after exiting the second cyclonic cleaning stage, air travels downwardly to the longitudinally spaced apart lower end of the pre-motor filter. 
     
     
         36 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 34  wherein, after exiting the second cyclonic cleaning stage, air travels downwardly to an upstream surface of the pre-motor filter. 
     
     
         37 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 36  wherein, after exiting the pre-motor filter, air travels rearwardly to the fluid flow motor. 
     
     
         38 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 34  wherein the pre-motor filter is upwardly removable. 
     
     
         39 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 34  wherein an outer perimeter of the pre-motor filter in a direction transverse to the central longitudinal axis is circular. 
     
     
         40 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 34  wherein the fluid flow motor and a handle of the hand vacuum cleaner are positioned rearward of the second cyclonic cleaning stage. 
     
     
         41 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 34  further comprising a manifold positioned upstream of the pre-motor filter and downstream of the second cyclonic cleaning stage, the manifold is located within the outer perimeter of the second cyclonic cleaning stage. 
     
     
         42 . A hand vacuum cleaner comprising:
 a) a first cyclonic cleaning stage comprising a first cyclone having an openable bottom;   b) a second cyclonic cleaning stage located downstream from the first cyclonic cleaning stage and comprising a plurality of cyclones in parallel, a central longitudinal axis and an outer perimeter extending around the central longitudinal axis;   c) a pre-motor filter positioned downstream from the second cyclonic cleaning stage and having filter material located within the outer perimeter of the second cyclonic cleaning stage; and,   d) a fluid flow motor that is downstream from the pre-motor filter, wherein the fluid flow motor has a rotational axis that is transverse to the central longitudinal axis, wherein the pre-motor filter is removable through an opening in an upper end of the hand vacuum cleaner.   
     
     
         43 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 42  wherein the pre-motor filter has an upper end and a longitudinally spaced apart lower end and, after exiting the second cyclonic cleaning stage, air travels downwardly to the spaced apart lower end of the pre-motor filter. 
     
     
         44 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 42  wherein, after exiting the second cyclonic cleaning stage, air travels downwardly to an upstream surface of the pre-motor filter. 
     
     
         45 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 44  wherein, after exiting the pre-motor filter, air travels rearwardly to the fluid flow motor. 
     
     
         46 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 42  wherein an outer perimeter of the pre-motor filter in a direction transverse to the central longitudinal axis is circular. 
     
     
         47 . The hand vacuum cleaner of  claim 42  further comprising a manifold positioned upstream of the pre-motor filter and downstream of the second cyclonic cleaning stage, the manifold is located within the outer perimeter of the second cyclonic cleaning stage.
