Abstract
Ready-to-use foamable pesticide compositions that contain a pesticide dispersed in a composition containing water, a co-solvent, surfactant and propellant. Methods for treating pests such as arthropods by contacting pests with such compositions are also provided.

1 . A ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition comprising:
water; a co-solvent selected from the group consisting of acetone, isopropyl alcohol and mixtures thereof; a propellant selected from the group consisting of dimethyl ether, carbon dioxide and mixtures thereof; a surfactant; and a pesticide.
2 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide as set forth in claim 1 wherein the composition consists essentially of water, acetone, dimethyl ether, carbon dioxide, surfactant, a pesticide and preservatives.
3 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein acetone, dimethyl ether and carbon dioxide form a continuous phase and the pesticide is dispersed throughout the continuous phase.
4 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the composition is a microemulsion.
5 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 4 comprising at least about 30% by weight water or at least about 50%, from about 30% to about 90%, from about 40% to about 80% or from about 50% to about 70% by weight water.
6 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 5 comprising at least about 5% by weight acetone or at least about 15%, at least about 20%, from about 5% to about 50%, from about 10% to about 40% or from about 20% to about 30% by weight acetone.

The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the composition is capable of being in a foam phase after application and remaining in the foam phase for less than about 10 minutes after application or less than about 5 minutes, less than about 1 minute, less than about 30 seconds, from about 1 second to about 1 minute, from about 5 seconds to about 1 minute or from about 5 seconds to about 30 seconds after application.

The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in claim 7 wherein the length of time the composition is capable of being in a foam phase is measured by applying the composition to a concrete surface at a rate of about 0.3 to about 0.7 g/foot (about 1.0 to about 2.3 g/meter), at a distance from the surface ranging from about 2 inches to about 4 inches (about 5 to about 10 cm).
9 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in claim 8 wherein the composition is applied through a fan spray actuator.
10 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 9 wherein the surfactant is non-ionic.
11 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 10 wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of polyethoxylated castor oil and polysorbates.
12 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 10 wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of polyethoxylated castor oil and polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monooleate.
13 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 12 comprising at least about 0.5% by weight surfactants or at least about 1%, at least about 3%, at least about 5%, from about 0.5% to about 15%, from about 1% to about 10% or from about 4% to about 8% by weight surfactants.

The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 13 wherein the pesticide is an arthropodicide selected from the group consisting of (M1) organo(thio)phosphate compounds selected from the group consisting of acephate, azamethiphos, azinphos-ethyl, azinphos-methyl, chlorethoxyfos, chlorfenvinphos, chlormephos, chlorpyrifos, chlorpyrifos-methyl, coumaphos, cyanophos, demeton-S-methyl, diazinon, dichlorvos/DDVP, dicrotophos, dimethoate, dimethylvinphos, disulfoton, EPN, ethion, ethoprophos, famphur, fenamiphos, fenitrothion, fenthion, flupyrazophos, fosthiazate, heptenophos, isoxathion, malathion, mecarbam, methamidophos, methidathion, mevinphos, monocrotophos, omethoate, oxydemeton-methyl, parathion, parathion-methyl, phenthoate, phorate, phosalone, phosmet, phosphamidon, phoxim, pirimiphos-methyl, profenofos, propetamphos, prothiofos, pyraclofos, pyridaphenthion, quinalphos, sulfotep, tebupirimfos, temephos, terbufos, tetrachlorvinphos, thiometon, triazophos, trichlorfon and vamidothion; 18 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 13 wherein the pesticide is fipronil.
19 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in claim 18 comprising at least about 0.01% by weight fipronil or at least about 0.1%, at least about 0.5%, from about 0.01% to about 1.5%, from about 0.1% to about 1% or from about 0.3% to about 1% by weight fipronil.
20 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 19 comprising a fipronil stabilizer compound.
21 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 20 wherein the composition is characterized by a foam expansion ratio of at least about 10:1 or at least about 25:1, from about 2:1 to about 60:1 or from about 10:1 to about 40:1.
22 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 21 comprising a preservative.
23 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in claim 22 wherein the preservative is selected from the group consisting of benzoic acid, sodium benzoate, potassium bicarbonate and mixtures thereof.
24 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in claim 22 or claim 23 comprising at least about 0.05% by weight benzoic acid as a preservative or at least about 0.1% by weight benzoic acid as a preservative.
25 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 22 to 24 comprising at least about 0.1% by weight potassium bicarbonate as a preservative or at least about 0.5% by weight potassium bicarbonate as a preservative.
26 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 25 comprising a propellant.
27 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in claim 26 wherein the propellant is dimethyl ether.
28 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 27 comprising at least about 1% by weight dimethyl ether or at least about 5%, from about 1% to about 12% or from about 3% to about 10% by weight dimethyl ether.
29 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 26 to 28 comprising dimethyl ether and carbon dioxide as propellants.
30 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 29 comprising at least about 0.05% by weight carbon dioxide or at least about 0.1%, at least about 0.5%, at least about 1%, from about 0.05% to 5% or from about 0.1% to about 2% by weight carbon dioxide.
31 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 30 wherein the composition is characterized by a pH of from about 6.5 to about 8 or from about 7 to about 7.25.
32 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 31 wherein the composition does not contain hydrocarbon propellants other than dimethyl ether.
33 . The ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth any one of claims 1 to 32 wherein the composition contains acetone and does not contain isopropyl alcohol.
34 . The method for controlling pests, the method comprising applying the ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 33 to the perimeter of a structure.
35 . The pesticide applicator for applying pesticide to pests, the applicator comprising a container and the ready-to-use foamable pesticide composition as set forth in any one of claims 1 to 33 within the container.
36 . A pesticide applicator for applying pesticide to a surface, the applicator comprising:
a container; and a pesticide composition within the container, the pesticide composition comprising water, a co-solvent selected from the group consisting of acetone, isopropyl alcohol, and mixtures thereof, a propellant selected from the group consisting of dimethyl ether, carbon dioxide and mixtures thereof and a pesticide.
37 . The pesticide applicator as set forth in claim 36 wherein the pesticide composition is pressurized within the container by a propellant.
38 . The pesticide applicator as set forth in claim 37 wherein the composition comprises dimethyl ether and carbon dioxide as propellants.
39 . The pesticide applicator as set forth in any one of claims 36 to 38 wherein the composition comprises at least about 1% by weight dimethyl ether or at least about 5% by weight dimethyl ether.
40 . The pesticide applicator as set forth in any one of claims 36 to 39 wherein the composition comprises at least about 0.1% by weight carbon dioxide or at least about 0.5% by weight carbon dioxide.
41 . The pesticide applicator as set forth in any one of claims 37 to 40 wherein the total amount of propellants in the pesticide composition is at least about 5% by weight of the composition or from about 1% to about 12% by weight of the composition.

50 . The pesticide applicator as set forth in any one of claims 36 to 49 wherein the composition consists essentially of water, acetone, dimethyl ether, carbon dioxide, surfactant, a pesticide and preservative compounds.
51 . The pesticide applicator as set forth in any one of claims 36 to 49 wherein acetone, dimethyl ether and carbon dioxide form a continuous phase and the pesticide is dispersed throughout the continuous phase.
52 . The pesticide applicator as set forth in any one of claims 36 to 51 wherein the composition is a microemulsion.
53 . The method for controlling pests, the method comprising dispensing the pesticide composition from the container of the pesticide applicator of any one of claims 36 to 52 and applying the composition to a surface.

A method for controlling pests, the method comprising applying to a surface a pesticide composition comprising water, a co-solvent selected from the group consisting of acetone and isopropyl alcohol, a propellant selected from the group consisting of dimethyl ether and carbon dioxide and a pesticide.
55 . The method as set forth in claim 54 comprising dimethyl ether and carbon dioxide and wherein acetone, dimethyl ether and carbon dioxide form a continuous phase and the pesticide is dispersed throughout the continuous phase.
56 . The method as set forth in claim 54 wherein the composition consists essentially of water, acetone, dimethyl ether, carbon dioxide, surfactant, a pesticide and preservatives.
57 . The method as set forth in any one of claims 54 to 56 wherein the composition is a microemulsion.

The method as set forth in any one of claims 54 to 57 wherein the composition is in a foam phase after application and remains in a foam phase for less than about 10 minutes after application or less than about 5 minutes, less than about 1 minute, less than about 30 seconds or from about 5 seconds to about 1 minute after application.
59 . The method as set forth in any one of claims 54 to 58 wherein the pest does not contact the composition until after about 30 minutes after application or until after about 1 day after application.
60 . The method as set forth in any one of claims 54 to 59 wherein the pest is an arthropod.

73 . The method as set forth in any one of claims 54 to 69 wherein the pesticide is fipronil.
74 . The method as set forth in claim 73 wherein the pesticide composition comprises at least about 0.1% by weight fipronil.
75 . The method as set forth in any one of claims 54 to 74 wherein the composition is characterized by a foam expansion ratio of at least about 2:1.
76 . The method as set forth in any one of claims 54 to 75 wherein the pesticide composition comprises a preservative compound.
77 . The method as set forth in any one of claims 54 to 76 wherein the composition is characterized by a pH of from about 6.5 to about 8.
78 . The method as set forth in any one of claims 54 to 77 wherein the composition comprises a pesticidally effective amount of pesticide.
79 . A method for applying a pesticide to a target surface, the method comprising:
dispensing a pesticide composition onto a first area of the target surface, the pesticide composition including a visual indicator to visually indicate where the pesticide composition has been applied after dispensing; and dispensing additional pesticide composition onto a second area of the target surface at least in part different from the first area thereof based at least in part on the visual indicator present in the pesticide composition dispensed onto the first area of the target surface.
