Abstract

Provided herein are chemical matrices, compositions, and methods for the treatment of skin diseases and disorders in an individual. Said chemical matrices and compositions comprise an alcohol selected from ethanol, isopropanol or n-propanol, at least one excipient, and, a corticosteroid, wherein the alcohol is distributed within the chemical matrix as a microbubble and the corticosteroid is present in less than the standardized topical corticosteroid concentration. Additionally, methods are described for the use of said chemical matrices and compositions for the treatment of skin diseases and disorders.

A chemical matrix comprising from about 2% to about 30% of an alcohol by volume, a corticosteroid and at least one excipient, wherein the chemical matrix is an ointment suitable for topical administration, the alcohol is primarily dispersed into the chemical matrix in the form of microbubbles, the alcohol is selected from ethanol, isopropanol, or n-propanol, or combinations thereof, and the corticosteroid is present in a concentration between about 1% and about 91% of the standardized topical corticosteroid concentration. 
     
     
         2 . The chemical matrix of  claim 1 , wherein the corticosteroid is present in a concentration of about 1%, about 5%, about 10%, about 15%, about 25%, about 35%, about 50%, about 65%, about 75%, about 85%, or about 91% of the standardized topical corticosteroid concentration. 
     
     
         3 . The chemical matrix of  claim 1 , wherein the corticosteroid is present in a concentration of about 1%, about 5%, about 10%, about 15%, or about 25% of the standardized topical corticosteroid concentration. 
     
     
         4 . The chemical matrix of  claim 1 , wherein the corticosteroid is present in a concentration of about 10%, about 15%, about 25%, or about 35% of the standardized topical corticosteroid concentration. 
     
     
         5 . The chemical matrix of  claim 1 , wherein the corticosteroid is desonide and the standardized topical corticosteroid concentration is 0.05%. 
     
     
         6 . The chemical matrix of  claim 1 , wherein the desonide is present in an amount of about 0.0005%, about 0.0025%, about 0.005%, about 0.009%, about 0.02%, or about 0.045%. 
     
     
         7 . The chemical matrix of  claim 1 , wherein the desonide is present in an amount of about 0.005%, about 0.01%, about 0.015%, or about 0.02%. 
     
     
         8 . The chemical matrix of  claim 1 , wherein the corticosteroid is mometasone and the standardized topical corticosteroid concentration is 0.1%. 
     
     
         9 . The chemical matrix of  claim 1 , wherein the mometasone is present in an amount of about 0.001%, about 0.005%, about 0.01%, about 0.02%, about 0.04%, or about 0.09%. 
     
     
         10 . The chemical matrix of  claim 1 , wherein the mometasone is present in an amount of about 0.01%, about 0.02%, about 0.03%, or about 0.04%. 
     
     
         11 . The chemical matrix of  claim 1 , wherein the alcohol is ethanol. 
     
     
         12 . The chemical matrix of  claim 1 , wherein the ointment is selected from AQUAPHOR®, white petrolatum USP, white ointment USP, hydrophilic petrolatum USP, or hydrophilic ointment USP. 
     
     
         13 . The chemical matrix of  claim 1 , wherein the chemical matrix comprises from about 2% to about 10% ethanol by volume. 
     
     
         14 . The chemical matrix of  claim 1 , wherein the chemical matrix comprises from about 10% to about 20% ethanol by volume. 
     
     
         15 . The chemical matrix of  claim 1 , wherein the chemical matrix comprises from about 20% to about 30% ethanol by volume. 
     
     
         16 . A chemical matrix comprising from about 2% to about 30% of an alcohol by volume, a therapeutically effective amount of a corticosteroid and at least one excipient, wherein the chemical matrix is an ointment suitable for topical administration, the alcohol is primarily dispersed into the chemical matrix in the form of microbubbles, the alcohol is selected from ethanol, isopropanol, or n-propanol, or combinations thereof, and the therapeutically effective amount of a corticosteroid is between about 1% and about 91% of the standardized topical corticosteroid concentration.

The chemical matrix of  claim 16 , wherein the therapeutically effective amount of a corticosteroid is about 1%, about 5%, about 10%, about 15%, about 25%, about 35%, about 50%, about 65%, about 75%, about 85%, or about 91% of the standardized topical corticosteroid concentration. 
     
     
         18 . The chemical matrix of  claim 16 , wherein the therapeutically effective amount of a corticosteroid is present in a concentration between about 1%, about 5%, about 10%, about 15%, or about 25% of the standardized topical corticosteroid concentration. 
     
     
         19 . The chemical matrix of  claim 16 , wherein the therapeutically effective amount of a corticosteroid is present in a concentration between about 10%, about 15%, about 25%, or about 35% of the standardized topical corticosteroid concentration. 
     
     
         20 . The chemical matrix of  claim 16 , wherein the corticosteroid is desonide and the standardized topical corticosteroid concentration is 0.05%.
