Abstract

A first server system identifies a first storage area of the first server system, the first storage area being associated with a first heat value and storing at least a portion of a file. The first server system determines an identifier corresponding to the portion of the file. The first server system associates the portion of the file with the first heat value. The first server system sends the identifier corresponding to the portion of the file and the associated heat value to a second server system, wherein the second server system includes a duplicate copy of the portion of the file.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A method comprising:
identifying, by one or more processors, a first storage area, wherein the first storage area is associated with: i) a first heat value and ii) at least a portion of a file; determining, by the one or more processors, an identifier corresponding to the at least portion of the file; and sending, by the one or more processors, the identifier and the first heat value to a server, wherein the server is configured to update a second heat value on the server based, at least in part, on one or both of the identifier and the first heat value.

2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:
determining, by the one or more processors, a workload activity of a first plurality of storage areas and, in response, modifying a first heat map of the first plurality of storage areas to associate the first storage area with the first heat value.

3 . The method of claim 2 further comprising:
 generating, by the one or more processors, a first storage of file data;
sending, by the one or more processors, a copy of the file data to the server in order to maintain a second storage of the file data; and
determining, by the one or more processors, one or more first storage tiers to allocate at least a portion of the file data in response to the first heat map.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifier further comprises a file name, a file offset, a portion length, and a remote file identifier, wherein the remote file identifier corresponds to a copy of the at least portion of the file on the server.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first storage area includes one or both of: one or more extents and one or more blocks.

         6 . A method comprising:
receiving, by one or more processors, i) an identifier and ii) a remote heat value that are associated, respectively, with i) at least a portion of a file and ii) a remote storage area in which the at least portion of the file is stored on a remote server; determining, by the one or more processors, that the remote server is unavailable; identifying, by the one or more processors, a local storage area that includes a copy of the at least portion of the file; and generating, by the one or more processors, an updated local heat value for the local storage area based, at least in part, on one or both of: a pre-existing local heat value of the local storage area and the remote heat value associated with the remote storage area.

7 . The method of claim 6 further comprising:
determining, by the one or more processors, a workload activity of a local plurality of storage areas and, in response, modifying a local heat map of the local plurality of storage areas to associate the local storage area with the pre-existing heat value.

8 . The method of claim 7 further comprising:
receiving, by the one or more processors, a copy of file data in order to maintain a local storage of the file data; and
determining, by the one or more processors, one or more local storage tiers to allocate at least a portion of the copy of the file data in response to the local heat map.

9 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the identifier further comprises a file name, a file offset, a portion length, and a remote file identifier, wherein the remote file identifier corresponds to a local replica of the at least portion of the file.

10 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of generating, by the one or more processors, the updated local heat value further comprises:
determining, by the one or more processors, the updated local heat value in response to a weighting policy, wherein the weighting policy includes one or both of: a storage quota and a heat modifier.

11 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of generating, by the one or more processors, the updated local heat value further comprises:
determining, by the one or more processors, an average heat value between the pre-existing local heat value and the remote heat value; and storing the average heat value as the updated local heat value.

12 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of generating, by the one or more processors, the updated local heat value further comprises:
selecting as the updated local heat value the greater of: the pre-existing local heat value and the remote heat value.

13 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the remote storage area and the local storage area include one or both of: one or more extents and one or more blocks.

         14 . A method comprising:
identifying, by one or more processors, a first storage area on a first server system, wherein the first storage area is associated with: i) a first heat value and ii) at least a portion of a file; determining, by the one or more processors, an identifier corresponding to the at least portion of the file; determining, by the one or more processors, that the first server system is unavailable; identifying, by the one or more processors, a second storage area on a second server system that includes a copy of the at least portion of the file; and generating, by the one or more processors, an updated second heat value for the second storage area based, at least in part, on one or both of: a pre-existing second heat value of the second storage area and the first heat value associated with the first storage area.
